As a seasoned Star Wars enthusiast who’s spent countless hours dissecting every nook and cranny of the galaxy far, far away, I find myself utterly fascinated by this revelation about the original ending of The Phantom Menace. If you had told me 25 years ago that Obi-Wan would be the older Jedi Master and Qui-Gon the young padawan, I wouldn’t have believed it faster than a speeder bike on Tatooine.
The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy was a groundbreaking cinematic experience that significantly reshaped the narrative of the Star Wars universe. Instead of diving straight into Anakin Skywalker’s transformation to the dark side, the initial film, “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace,” introduced the tale of Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor). They were on a mission to unravel a political mystery, a conspiracy that also revealed unsettling Force disturbances. These disturbances hinted at the resurfacing of the Sith menace, as well as a prophesied “chosen one” who could potentially shift the power balance.
It’s amazing to discover, even after 25 years, that the plot of Phantom Menace initially contained a huge twist that, if implemented, would have fundamentally altered the mythology of Star Wars for fans!
Star Wars: The Phantom Menace’s Big Twist Ending Revealed
Artist Iain McCaig created character designs for “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace”; in a recent interview, McCaig revealed an intriguing concept that was proposed but ultimately didn’t appear in the final film. This idea involved a significant character transformation, where Obi-Wan Kenobi would have been the older Jedi, while Qui-Gon Jinn would have been the younger padawan instead.
McCaig shared an intriguing observation with the official Star Wars site: “It’s fascinating to see how things change over time.” Previously, the elder Jedi went by Obi-Wan and the younger one was known as Qui-Gon.
The revelations continued: McCaig disclosed that originally, George Lucas planned for “Qui-Gon” to adopt Obi-Wan’s name following Obi-Wan’s death in the battle against Darth Maul. In simpler terms, Lucas intended for Qui-Gon to inherit and carry on the name of his former master after he passed away in their fight with Darth Maul.
In the final moments, when Obi-Wan dies and Qui-Gon overpowers Darth Maul while staying by his Master’s side during his passing, McCaig points out that it wasn’t just about continuing his Master’s mission, but also adopting his name. Essentially, Qui-Gon transforms into Obi-Wan.
The change of names wasn’t merely a surprising plot device; rather, it was designed by George Lucas to alter our perspective on Alec Guinness’s portrayal of Obi-Wan Kenobi in “Star Wars: A New Hope”. He aimed to reshape how we perceive his performance.
“McCaig explained that when Alec Guinness appears in A New Hope, his hood is lowered and he says, ‘Obi-Wan? Now that’s a name I’ve not heard…,’ because at that point, his character isn’t Obi-Wan, it’s Qui-Gon. However, McCaig added that Lucas altered the scene at the very end.
Star Wars frequently explores characters assuming new names or identities, such as Darth Vader’s former self, Anakin Skywalker; Caleb Dume becoming Kanan Jarrus; Ahsoka Tano operating under the cover name “Fulcrum”; and so on. The transformation of Obi-Wan into Qui-Gon would have been challenging for fans to accept; this likely prompted Lucas to alter the dynamic, resulting in a more traditional Master-apprentice relationship between Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon, which became one of the most impactful relationships in Obi-Wan’s life and laid the groundwork for his connection with Anakin Skywalker.
