Star Wars director confirms highly-anticipated series has been shelved

As a seasoned movie reviewer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment upon hearing the demise of Lando Calrissian’s solo series on Disney Plus. It was like the tantalizing aroma of fresh popcorn wafting through the theater, only to have it snatched away just as you were about to take that first satisfying bite.

After many years of planning, there was a faint possibility that a Lando Calrissian spin-off series for “Solo: A Star Wars Story” might appear on Disney Plus. Unfortunately, recent confirmation shows that this project will not move forward as planned.

According to director Justin Simien, the series will not be moving forward as planned. He shared that while much of it had been developed, it simply wasn’t meant to materialize.

According to Simien, it was quite advanced. There was a bible, there were sketches, and there were scripts prepared.

The director and scriptwriter openly discussed their sadness over the canceled project, confessing that they weren’t pleased with the fact that the television series wouldn’t be produced.

He expressed that it needs to be straightforward for him. Essentially, ‘I’m grieving. I don’t feel well.’ He emphasized the importance of allowing himself to experience those emotions.

As a seasoned creator, I’ve amassed an abundance of knowledge and insights from each project I undertake. While I can’t literally possess the storylines, intellectual properties (IP), or characters, the wisdom I’ve gained remains uniquely mine. It’s a part of my journey as an artist, something that shapes my future endeavors and sets me apart from others in this field. Alas, once learned, these lessons can’t be unlearned, and it’s not up for debate.

In 2020, it was initially disclosed that a spin-off featuring Lando would be produced, and there were expectations that Donald Glover might reprise his well-liked character. Yet, details regarding its progress remained scant.

Previously, when asked if he’d return to his role, Glover told GQ: “I’d be thrilled to portray Lando once more. It’s enjoyable playing him, but it needs to be done in the right manner. Time is valuable.”

Earlier this year, while marketing the Prime Video series Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Glover had mentioned the Lando project before.

When asked if writing the series with his brother was an effortless decision, Glover told The Hollywood Reporter: “Not at all. Maya [Erskine] and I often discuss the importance of saying no in this industry. However, I agreed because I admire the characters and my children are fond of Star Wars.”

As someone who has spent years working in the entertainment industry, I can confidently say that when one takes on the challenge of leaving their mark on a franchise as substantial as this, it becomes immediately evident to me whether the end result will be successful or not. It’s a battle against the established norms and expectations, and only those who are truly passionate and committed can make it through. The process is grueling, but the reward for those who succeed is immeasurable.
