As a lifelong Star Wars fan who’s seen the original trilogy more times than I can count, the announcement of a Lando Calrissian spinoff has me beyond excited! The charm and wit that Donald Glover brought to the character in Solo: A Star Wars Story was electrifying, and I can’t wait to see what he does with a full-length film.
Over the course of the Star Wars saga, viewers have witnessed numerous tales of fascist regimes trying to dominate the galaxy and the alliances formed to resist them. With an underlying seriousness, Donald Glover aims to reintroduce a playful and exciting spirit into the franchise with the upcoming Star Wars: Lando, serving as a contrast to the more somber themes of the Skywalker Saga. At present, Glover is working on a film focused on Lando Calrissian, although the release date for this project remains undetermined.
In a recent chat with the Wall Street Journal, when asked about his goals for Lando, Glover stated, “I simply aim for it to be entertaining. As a Star Wars enthusiast myself, I believe there’s a need for more enjoyment in the series, given the current climate. It’s challenging because there are many serious matters at hand and these are what bind us. However, I understand why things must be serious. Yet, I believe part of being human involves having a duty to find pleasure. And right now, I feel we could use more of that.
He went on, expressing, “Star Wars is fantastic, yet at times it gets overly serious, even too serious. The Skywalker saga in particular is incredibly intense. What I appreciate most about Lando, though, is that he’s a rogue character – something many people can identify with. It seems like he might say, ‘This war is ridiculous, I need cash,’ which I believe resonates with everyone. So, I wish it would maintain a fun vibe.
Glover debuted in the franchise with Solo: A Star Wars Story, and while the film itself earned a divisive response among Star Wars fans, the one element of the origin story that earned nearly universal praise was Glover’s performance as a young Lando. While Solo seemed to be setting up a possible series of films, the closest fans were given to confirmation of a continuation was Lucasfilm announcing a Star Wars: Lando miniseries in 2020.
Although there was an initial announcement about the upcoming miniseries, there have been limited updates on the project in the following years, with the latest update coming from Donald Glover himself in February. It appears that instead of the miniseries, Donald and his brother Stephen Glover are now focusing their efforts on creating a movie. However, details about when the film might start production and its potential distribution (whether it’s for theaters or streaming platforms) remain uncertain at this time.
