Star Wars Episode I: Jedi Power Battles Reveals Four New Playable Characters (Exclusive)

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia when I hear about the remastered version of “Star Wars Episode I: Jedi Power Battles“. Back in 2000, I remember spending countless hours mastering the art of lightsaber combat on my trusty PlayStation. The announcement of new playable characters has me more excited than a Wookiee at a smorgasbord.

Back in 2000, “Star Wars Episode I: Jedi Power Battles” was initially launched with a variety of characters from the film for players to select, such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Mace Windu among others. A refined version will hit contemporary platforms on January 23rd, encompassing PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. The revamped edition of “Jedi Power Battles” will introduce characters that were absent in the original game, and we at ComicBook have been granted early access to unveil four of them.

Friendly Rifle Droid – In the game Jedi Power Battles, players often slash through Battle Droids, but this one fights alongside you. True to its name, it carries a large rifle, enabling it to launch long-range attacks against its enemies.

Playable Character: Tusken Raider – For those who enjoy a hands-on approach, the Tatooine resident known as the Tusken Raider is at your service. In various Star Wars productions, these inhabitants are often depicted with their signature staffs, and in Jedi Power Battles, the one you can control will be no exception.

Ishi Tib is a formidable melee combatant, boasting impressive strength and agility. Though not as iconic as Tusken Raiders or Battle Droids, members of the Ishi Tib species have been featured in various Star Wars productions, first appearing in “Return of the Jedi”.

A mercenary is essentially a fighter who relies on raw power and strategic assaults to vanquish adversaries. Originally designed as enemies for the 1999 “Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace” video game, they later appeared in “Jedi Power Battles”. This time around, however, players can control and play as the Mercenary for the first time.

As Aspyr mentions, there are additional new playable characters coming to Star Wars Episode I: Jedi Power Battles, with further details to emerge as the launch date approaches. Currently, it appears these fresh characters will contribute to a more diverse gaming experience. In the initial game, Queen Amidala and Captain Panaka were unlockable characters who primarily used ranged weapons. It looks like Rifle Droid is set to join them, while Tusken Raider’s gameplay may resemble that of the playable Jedi characters. Ishi Tib and Mercenary seem to be unique additions, and it will be intriguing to witness their gameplay once the game is released.

A notable feature in the original Jedi Power Battles was the cooperative mission option for players. This feature remains in the game’s remake, and introducing new playable characters could enhance the tactical depth. Having one player specialize in ranged attacks while another focuses on lightsaber or melee combat could make it simpler to handle hordes of enemies, although it’s hard to predict without getting a firsthand experience. Fortunately, the game’s launch is coming up within a few months, so we won’t have to wait long to discover what Aspyr has contributed to this updated version of Jedi Power Battles.
