Star Wars: Ewan McGregor Holding Out Hope to Play Obi-Wan Kenobi Again

As a hardcore Star Wars fan who has been following the saga since the original trilogy, the news that Ewan McGregor might return as Obi-Wan Kenobi fills me with unbridled excitement! It’s been a quarter of a century since I first saw him wielding that iconic green lightsaber, and I must admit, he hasn’t lost a beat.

It has been two years since “Star Wars” fans last saw Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Disney+ series bearing the same title, and the actor expresses optimism that this six-episode series won’t mark the end of his portrayal of the legendary Jedi Master on screen. During an interview with Variety, McGregor reminisced about his time playing the cherished character, which he began 25 years ago for “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.” He also shared that he still has more stories to tell featuring Obi-Wan before the timeline aligns with Alec Guinness’ portrayal in “Star Wars: A New Hope.

McGregor expressed his hope for another opportunity, stating, “I believe there are still a few more tales to unfold, given where we left off in the series and when Alec Guinness makes an appearance with Luke Skywalker on screen.

Hayden Christensen, who acted alongside McGregor in Star Wars, shares the same enthusiasm about the actor reprising his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi. This eagerness stems not only from the prospect of working together again, but also from the excitement of watching McGregor embody the character once more, viewed through a fan’s lens.

From a devoted admirer’s perspective, if it translates into spending more time with Ewan, that’s an instant yes! However, I truly hope his portrayal of the character doesn’t end. As a fan, watching him breathe life into Obi-Wan is nothing short of exhilarating, and he’s simply outstanding in the role.

McGregor has also expressed his wish to reprise his role as Obi-Wan in the past. Recently, he mentioned that he hasn’t received any updates about potential seasons of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, but he enjoys the character and is keen to play it again. He pointed out that he still has a few years left before he matches Guinness’ age in A New Hope.

For quite some time now, I’ve been candid about the need to step into Obi-Wan Kenobi’s robes once more, but I’ve had my share of fibs about that. Let me assure you, I’m not pulling any strings now. Truth be told, neither Lucasfilm nor Disney has reached out with a script for another installment. The Obi-Wan series was designed as a limited run and it’s been well received, which I’m thrilled about. I truly enjoyed playing the role and hope we get a chance to revisit it in the future. Fingers crossed, I believe there will be opportunities down the line. After all, I still have a few years before I reach Alec Guinness’ age during ‘A New Hope’, so there’s plenty of time for more tales from that era.

Although Conor McGregor seems eager, there’s not been much talk about another Obi-Wan Kenobi story or his character appearing in other Star Wars productions yet. However, this doesn’t necessarily rule out the possibility. The upcoming series, Andor, shares a similar timeframe with Obi-Wan Kenobi, which could potentially pave the way for related narratives, even if it’s not an actual appearance by Obi-Wan himself. The second season of Andor is planned for 2025. Moreover, there’s still a chance we might see more of Obi-Wan in the future. In 2023, series director Deborah Chow revealed that she and McGregor had discussed ideas for a potential follow-up to Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Chow remarked that he had expected to wrap up such a series in a grand manner, only to find himself in an empty parking lot with the secondary crew. It’s always disappointing how anticlimactic it feels, yet as Ewan and I completed our final shot for the second unit, he was already brainstorming ideas for season two. With another decade of tales to tell, it seems there’s still plenty more to explore. While it’s not entirely certain, a ‘never say never’ attitude seems fitting for this project.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is streaming on Disney+.
