As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension when it comes to Star Wars: Eclipse. The tantalizing glimpse we got at The Game Awards 2021 left me yearning for more, especially given the rich lore of the High Republic era. However, the eerie silence that’s followed since then has me wondering if the Force is not with this game as much as I’d like it to be.
On December 9th, 2021, a fresh Star Wars video game, called “Star Wars: Eclipse,” was unveiled at The Game Awards. This game is being developed by Quantic Dream, known for producing games such as “Heavy Rain” and “Detroit: Become Human.” A stunning cinematic trailer showcasing various worlds, lightsaber combat, and a popular Jedi Master from the series was shown when it was announced. However, since then, there has been no new information or updates about the game, leaving many Star Wars enthusiasts curious about its current state and speculating if it might have been discreetly cancelled.
For those who may not have caught the first announcement, “Star Wars: Eclipse” is set during the High Republic era, much earlier than the occurrences of “The Phantom Menace”. This means that most familiar Star Wars characters wouldn’t be around at this time, but Yoda was glimpsed in the game’s trailer, gazing over Coruscant from the High Council Chamber. The game appears to follow a narrative that shifts between various playable characters, each with their unique motivations and background stories. Additionally, players will encounter “species and planets” never seen before in the Star Wars universe. You can watch the only available trailer for “Star Wars: Eclipse” below.
Currently, it’s unclear what’s going on with “Star Wars: Eclipse.” It appears that the game might have been prematurely announced, which is a pattern seen in the video game industry where developers and publishers announce games years before they are actually released. Interestingly, “Star Wars: Eclipse” isn’t the only Disney game that has been announced ahead of its readiness; for example, we haven’t heard much about “Marvel’s Wolverine,” which was announced by PlayStation and Insomniac Games around three months before “Star Wars: Eclipse.” Similarly, “Marvel’s Blade” was announced by Xbox and Arkane Lyon at The Game Awards last year, but there’s no indication that the game will be coming out soon.
It seems likely that Quantic Dream has been continuing work on Star Wars: Eclipse, and they’ll share more details when they feel ready. The exact stage of development for Star Wars: Eclipse at the time of its announcement isn’t clear, but it’s been 6 years since Detroit: Become Human was completed. Fans of the High Republic era were recently let down by the cancellation of The Acolyte series on Disney+, and they’re hoping for updates on Star Wars: Eclipse soon. May Star Wars: Eclipse meet the expectations set by its initial trailer!
