Over the weekend, a homemade trailer for a hypothetical adaptation of the Thrawn trilogy has sparked discussion among Star Wars enthusiasts, leaving them pondering what could lie ahead for this part of the saga. On Wednesday, YouTube user Jar Jar Jinks shared the video, skillfully combining clips and audio from various Star Wars movies, TV shows, audiobooks, and fan projects. Given these limitations, it’s quite impressive to see how well-established Thrawn has already been within the Star Wars universe. The character has appeared in Ahsoka and Star Wars Rebels, but there’s still uncertainty about which parts of his story are considered canonical in the Disney era.
The Thrawn trilogy, or Heir to the Empire trilogy as it’s also known, is among the most successful spin-off novels in the Star Wars universe. Written by Timothy Zahn and published between 1991 and 1993, these books are renowned for introducing characters like Grand Admiral Thrawn that have become staples of the franchise. The planet Coruscant was first featured in these books and played a significant role in the prequel trilogy. For many years, fans have advocated for an adaptation of these books as a potential direction for the Star Wars franchise to grow.
One enthusiastic fan has shown great creativity by compiling a trailer that’s ignited excitement among viewers. This trailer combines clips from multiple Star Wars movies and TV series, as well as other films like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. For Thrawn’s dialogue, it pulls from audiobooks, while fan films are used sparingly to weave the narrative together in certain sections.
Originally, Zahn’s novels significantly boosted the Star Wars universe beyond films, expanding it into books and comics, now known as Star Wars Legends. However, after Disney took over the franchise and streamlined its narrative continuity, there was uncertainty about whether Thrawn still played a crucial role in the main storyline. To this day, it remains unclear if his entire tale will be transferred directly to the new canon or rewritten for adaptation. Thrawn was introduced as a significant antagonist in Ashoka, and has also been mentioned in Tales of the Empire and The Mandalorian.
In his most current body of work, Zahn primarily delves into the historical background of Thrawn, with a series of novels taking place during the early stages of the Empire and another set in even earlier times when Thrawn was brought up in regions beyond established space. Notably, his ‘Heir to the Empire’ trilogy is set five years following the events of ‘Return of the Jedi,’ which coincidentally aligns with the timeframe where ‘The Mandalorian’ and all other Disney+ streaming series take place. With Thrawn now appearing in ‘Ahsoka,’ fans eagerly anticipate that some aspects of this narrative might finally be adapted for screen.
Currently, enthusiasts can access Zahn’s books along with other works starring Thrawn across print, digital, and audio mediums. Meanwhile, “Ahsoka” is available for streaming on Disney+, and production for Season 2 has commenced.
