Star Wars: New Movie Trilogy Reportedly In Development With Surprising Writer-Producer

As a long-time Star Wars enthusiast who has followed the saga since its inception, I must say that the news of a new trilogy in development is both exhilarating and intriguing. My first encounter with this galaxy far, far away was during the original trilogy’s release, and the experience left an indelible mark on my life. The prequels, despite their flaws, still managed to captivate me, and the sequels, while divisive, offered a fresh take on the saga that I found compelling.

A new Star Wars trilogy is said to be in the works at Lucasfilm, which will continue the Skywalker Saga. Simon Kinberg, a long-time X-Men movie writer and producer, has reportedly signed a deal to write and produce this upcoming trilogy (tentatively named Episodes 10-12). It’s important to note that this new trilogy is separate from other Star Wars projects in development, such as James Mangold’s film about the First Jedi and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s movie about Rey Skywalker establishing the New Jedi Order.

This marks a significant change in Lucasfilm’s trajectory, much like Marvel Studios with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The shift could be hinting at major changes within Lucasfilm itself. Post the controversial Sequel Trilogy films (The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, The Rise of Skywalker), Lucasfilm is attempting to diversify the franchise by producing spinoffs based on Skywalker Saga content (such as The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, Obi-Wan, Andor) or venturing into entirely new realms of storytelling (The High Republic, The Acolyte, Tales of the Jedi, Star Wars Visions).

To put it simply, out of all the content in the expanded portfolio, none has achieved as much success as the Skywalker Saga films, with even “The Rise of Skywalker” earning $1.077 billion at the box office. The Sequel series (despite being divisive) have created profitable new merchandise and introduced popular new characters like Kylo Ren and Rey to the franchise. With Disney’s returning CEO, Bob Iger, emphasizing big-budget films based on established brands, it makes sense to return to the Skywalker Saga – but the challenge is figuring out how to approach it effectively.
