It’s common knowledge that Ubisoft was underwhelmed by the commercial success of their action-adventure game, Star Wars Outlaws, in 2023. As reported by VGC, the game didn’t even make it into the top 50 best-selling games in Europe, with newer titles like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor selling more units.
Contrary to the anticipation surrounding Star Wars Outlaws, it garnered a fair amount of positive attention due to its trailers and being developed by Massive. However, critical response was underwhelming. In our own review, we awarded the game a 6, primarily due to its challenging stealth mechanics and sections where failure occurred instantly, which were identified as its major drawbacks.
The suboptimal quality of service has led to several repercussions, potentially contributing significantly to Ubisoft’s founders, the Guillemot family, seeking a takeover in an attempt to halt their declining share prices. Following the launch of Star Wars Outlaws, Ubisoft’s stock prices dipped noticeably, as physical sales in the UK were estimated to be about 55% lower than those of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
Experts have not given favorable reviews to the company, as JP Morgan analyst Daniel Kerven claimed that the game Star Wars Outlaws did not reach its projected sales figures. Consequently, they reduced their anticipated sales for this title by a total of 2 million units.
Ever since the launch of the game, various updates have dropped with an aim to rectify some of its major flaws. A notable update from November made significant alterations to the stealth mechanics within Star Wars Outlaws. Likewise, updates similar in nature have been deployed to modify combat and cover systems too.
The expansion pack for Star Wars Outlaws, titled “Wild Card,” was released but failed to meet expectations due to uninteresting script and dialogue, brevity, and a poorly designed final boss battle. Interestingly enough, it’s now available on Steam in addition to the Ubisoft Connect store for PC users.
Currently, Ubisoft is collaborating with consultants to gain the best insights on maximizing the worth of their intellectual properties and other resources. It’s been mentioned that CEO Yves Guillemot has held discussions about a possible acquisition by Tencent, where Tencent aims for greater influence over the decision-making process of Ubisoft’s board.
Apart from other Ubisoft games, it’s been reported that they are encountering problems as well. Notably, the company recently declared that the game titled XDefiant will be ceasing operations. Additionally, the release date for the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been pushed back to March 20.
