As a long-time Star Wars enthusiast who has navigated through the galaxy far, far away in various forms of media, I must admit that my excitement for “Star Wars Outlaws” was tempered by some initial concerns. The game’s open world design and captivating Star Wars aesthetic were enticing, but the reports of frustrating insta-fail stealth sections had me hesitant to jump into the cockpit.
The reception for Star Wars Outlaws, as expressed by creative director Julian Gerighty, has been somewhat divided, not entirely meeting his expectations. While the game has garnered appreciation for its open-world design and faithful representation of the Star Wars aesthetic, it’s also faced criticisms in other areas. A notable point of contention is the insta-fail stealth sections, an issue that Gerighty himself acknowledges as “extremely punishing.
Speaking in an interview with GamesRadar, Gerighty spoke about one of the game’s earlier insta-fail sections, admitting its issues, and adding that developer Massive Entertainment is currently working on fixing the issues.
He mentioned that you might be recalling one of the tough early missions in Mirogana. However, he considered this to be a flaw, something they aim to rectify. He didn’t suggest getting rid of the fail state entirely, but rather finding numerous opportunities to make it more enjoyable and clear.
Gerighty further stated that the intention wasn’t to make the section seem “unjust” as it currently appears, and he clarified that this issue had “slipped in during the last week or so” of the game’s development process. The upcoming patch designed to address these problems is expected within the next 10 days, according to Gerighty.
He expressed that the situation doesn’t seem just recently, and it currently feels unjust to him. However, he wants to clarify that this was not our initial plan. This issue has arisen over the past week or so, but we’re already working on rectifying it for an update due within approximately 10 days.
Mathias Karlson, the director, shared insights into Massive Entertainment’s methodology for maintaining a harmonious blend of stealth segments within the game. He also mentioned that if the current balance falls short, they are open to player suggestions and feedback.
We aim for players to find themselves in a delicate balance where they feel hidden but also on the verge of being discovered. It’s a situation where they think, ‘I’m undetected, oh no: They might spot me soon. I was spotted, but I still have options to respond, as long as I don’t trigger an alarm.’ However, if this balance doesn’t resonate with the current settings or a significant number of players, we understand and will certainly reconsider.
Gerighty agreed wholeheartedly, stating, “If you inform us that certain elements are hindering players from fully enjoying the game, then we’ll adjust the game’s narrative setting accordingly. A public announcement might sound like this: ‘Stormtroopers have moved into Toshara, leaving a skeleton crew on site.’ We make these changes to maximize enjoyment for the players during those crucial moments.
In our assessment of “Star Wars Outlaws”, we awarded it a 6 out of 10. We noted that it excels in its expansive open-world setting and captures the free-spirited, impromptu style of a traditional Star Wars rogue tale. However, it has several noteworthy flaws such as technical glitches, outdated design choices, and awkward movement mechanics that detract from the overall experience.
