Star Wars: Rebels Star Freddie Prinze Jr. Explains Rise of Skywalker Cameo

Star Wars: Rebels Star Freddie Prinze Jr. Explains Rise of Skywalker Cameo

As a huge Star Wars fan and avid follower of the Rebels animated series, I was thrilled to see Freddie Prinze Jr.’s cameo as Kanan Jarrus in The Rise of Skywalker. In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Prinze shared his experience of being approached for this small voice role. Initially hesitant due to the potential dilution of the character and the powerful ending of Rebels, it took some persuasive phone calls to convince him.

In the final installment of the Star Wars saga, “The Rise of Skywalker,” Freddie Prinze Jr made a surprise appearance as Kanan Jarrus, offering guidance to Rey towards the end of the film. During a recent interview with ScreenRant, Prinze Jr shared how he came to be part of this cameo. Initially hesitant, he was eventually persuaded to join for a brief voice role due to some strategic phone calls. With the renewed interest in Star Wars and its animated series like Rebels, there’s a strong sense of nostalgia driving expectations high for all the actors involved. Although no confirmation yet, we might see more of Kanan in the future.

Prinz Jr. expressed his thoughts by saying, “Each time Kanan appears, starting from the animated series, I believe it slightly weakens the character for me. I wasn’t enthusiastic about providing the voiceover in the last film, and it took some persuasive phone calls to change my mind. I didn’t feel that Kanan held enough power to communicate as a Force ghost from the past.”

He firmly declined, “I won’t be part of Star Wars or portray another character. I simply don’t prefer it. I also dislike seeing other actors take on multiple roles. You’re an excellent actor; focus on one superhero role instead. It seems unusual to see you in two roles, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do it if capable.”

Would We Ever See Kanan In Live-Action?

Many fans are eagerly anticipating the appearance of “Rebels” characters in live-action, with shows like “Star Wars: Ahsoka” and “The Mandalorian” already delivering. However, there is growing interest in learning about the backstory of Hera Syndulla and Kanan Jarrus’ crew before they met Ezra Bridger and his friends. Unfortunately for fans of Jason Isaacs (who voices the character of the Grand Admiral Thrawn in Rebels), it seems unlikely that he will return to the Star Wars universe for this storyline, as he recently shared with ComicBook that such a return is not currently on the table.

In my perspective, Kanan’s tale has reached its conclusion, and I was moved to tears by the beautiful ending. It wasn’t my intention to be callous when I say this; our aim was to evoke emotion from you. I also hesitated to record the voice-over for the last Star Wars film [The Rise of Skywalker]. To me, it seemed unnecessary and contrived.

In simpler terms, Prinze shared, “Each time someone asks me about reprising my role as Kanan, it feels like diminishing the magnificent finale… It’s an awe-inspiring moment for me. Consequently, I’ve moved on from that story and have no desire to be part of it again. Plus, playing a different character in that galaxy seems strange, so I don’t plan on joining the Star Wars Universe.”
