In “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith”, Emperor Palpatine manages to keep the Jedi in a state of disarray. Although they had won some significant battles during the Clone Wars, the Grand Army of the Republic struggled to gain control over the Separatists, particularly General Grievous, one of their new commanders. This fearsome being abducts Palpatine prior to the events of “Revenge of the Sith”, and slips away when Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker arrive to save the Republic’s ruler. With Palpatine still in play, the Jedi are forced to divide their forces across the galaxy, with even Grand Master Yoda taking on a mission of his own. He journeys to Kashyyyk, the planet where Wookiees originate.
Incorporating Chewbacca’s species into the last prequel film adds a personal touch to his struggle against the Empire since the Republic initially comes to Kashyyyk to aid, but ultimately transforms into the Wookiees’ oppressor. George Lucas and his team overstep boundaries by assigning a significant role to Chewbacca in Revenge of the Sith.
Chewbacca’s Role in Revenge of the Sith Weakens His Relationship With Han Solo
In this Star Wars saga, when Yoda embarks on a mission to Kashyyyk, following Ki-Adi Mundi’s droid attack warning, it sets up an exciting anticipation for a Chewbacca appearance. Given that Chewie doesn’t cross paths with Han Solo until later in the narrative, his presence on this battlefield is not unexpected. Instead of merely making a fleeting background appearance, George Lucas cleverly casts Chewbacca as a high-ranking officer within the Wookiee army and right-hand man to General Tarfful. He plays a pivotal role in devising the Wookiee attack strategy and spends much of his time strategizing alongside Yoda, who is there to command the Clones. This unexpected yet fitting role for Chewbacca adds depth to the storyline and keeps fans on the edge of their seats.
As the fight draws to a close, Yoda senses a troubling Force disturbance when Anakin turns to the dark side. With his lightsaber in hand, Yoda fends off some Clones, who were about to attack him due to Order 66 triggering their chip restraints. Chewbacca and Tarfful aid Yoda in escaping the planet, and they share a poignant farewell as Yoda leaves, understanding that the galaxy will undergo a profound transformation from this point onwards.
In the original Star Wars trilogy, Chewbacca never mentions Yoda, although Luke Skywalker says he’s going to find him upon Obi-Wan’s instructions. This can be overlooked since it might have been that Chewie wasn’t paying attention when Luke mentioned his friend’s name. However, Han Solo’s disbelief in the Force at the start of Star Wars: A New Hope is harder to accept. Given that his closest companion has had numerous encounters with Jedi and likely talked about them, it seems unlikely for Han not to be aware of their existence. The contradiction becomes even more apparent when we consider Chewbacca’s fondness for the Jedi as portrayed in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Gives Chewbacca Another Jedi Ally
Prior to the events of “Revenge of the Sith“, Chewbacca finds himself in a predicament following his capture by Trandoshan hunters seeking sport. Ahsoka Tano, apprentice to Anakin Skywalker, finds herself similarly trapped by these hunters. In order to escape, Ahsoka partners with Chewbacca. Her familiarity with the Wookiee language, Shyriiwook, proves useful in navigating their situation, and together they engage the Trandoshans in combat. Reinforcements, including Tarfful and other Wookiees, soon arrive to bolster their forces. The ensuing battle does not last long.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but reflect on Chewbacca’s visit to the Jedi Temple in Coruscant. With the prisoners safe and everyone returning home, this Wookiee warrior got a rare opportunity to step into the hallowed grounds where many Jedi have trained. Yet, it seems that this experience, though beneficial for his role in “Revenge of the Sith”, didn’t do much justice to his character in the original trilogy.
Here’s the thing: Chewbacca, a friend who has stood by Han Solo through thick and thin, let him look like a bit of a fool in front of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker. Now, Han may be headstrong and not always open to advice, but Chewie could’ve at least intervened and shown some respect for the Jedi who had helped him throughout their shared journey.
In essence, it feels like a missed opportunity for the loyal Wookiee to acknowledge the guidance and support provided by the Jedi Order over the years.
