Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker Star Addresses Possible Return in New Jedi Order

Actress Naomi Ackie, famously known for her role as Jannah, the stormtrooper-turned-freedom-fighter in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker“, has expressed her readiness to reprise the character in the upcoming “New Jedi Order” movie. During a promotional event at the Sundance Film Festival for her new film “Sorry, Baby”, Ackie spoke with Screen Rant and hinted at a potential return to the Star Wars universe. “If Lucasfilm calls,” she said, implying that she’s waiting for them. “Star Wars, let’s make it happen! I hope they contact me, we’ll see if my schedule allows!

At Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023, it was announced that “New Jedi Order” is an upcoming standalone film, happening 15 years after the events of “The Rise of Skywalker.” Daisy Ridley will reprise her role as Rey, who will lead a new phase for the Jedi Order. Over the past few years, this project has faced challenges in production, going through multiple screenwriters. Most recently, George Nolfi, co-writer of “The Bourne Ultimatum,” has taken over scriptwriting duties from Steven Knight. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is set to direct “New Jedi Order,” though a release date has not been established yet.

In the movie “The Rise of Skywalker”, Ackie made her first appearance as the character Jannah, playing a secondary role. During their search for the Sith wayfinder, Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron encountered Jannah on Kef Bir. It’s revealed that before defecting, Jannah was part of the First Order. In the film, she and her team switch allegiance to the Resistance, contributing to the Battle of Exegol. By the end of “The Rise of Skywalker”, it appears that Jannah will be joining Lando Calrissian on a quest to find her long-lost family.

As a die-hard Star Wars fan, I can’t help but wonder when the New Jedi Order might start rolling cameras. For now, we’ve got something exciting to look forward to: Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian & Grogu is set to premiere in May 2026! Following that galactic adventure, Shawn Levy’s yet-to-be-titled standalone Star Wars film is expected to take the stage. Rumors have it that Ryan Gosling might be joining the cast, and if everything goes according to plan, they could start filming as soon as this fall!

In “The Rise of Skywalker,” there are hints that the character Jannah may have latent Jedi powers, much like Finn who has been confirmed to be Force-sensitive. Given this, it’s possible that Jannah could seek training at Rey’s temple, learning to harness her abilities in the Force. Since Jannah didn’t get much focus in “The Rise of Skywalker,” this could provide an interesting opportunity to develop her character further as she embarks on this new stage of her journey. If John Boyega is interested in reprising his role as Finn in a future film like “New Jedi Order,” it might also delve deeper into their relationship, offering more insight into their past and the connection between them.

Absolutely, the progression of the “New Jedi Order” storyline will determine if characters like Jannah from “Rise of Skywalker” have a role. With the significant time leap, it’s possible that Rey and her comrades have moved on in the years following the war; perhaps Jannah reunited with her family and chose to stay with them. It will be intriguing to watch how things unfold moving forward. If the “New Jedi Order” fails to maintain momentum, Lucasfilm might opt for another project featuring Rey, and in that case, we could see Jannah appearing elsewhere instead.
