Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Almost Cast Goonies as Adults (and That Makes Sense)

As a child of the ’80s, I can’t help but feel a wave of nostalgia upon hearing about Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. The blend of Amblin-style adventure with the Star Wars universe is a dream come true for someone who grew up watching E.T., The Goonies, and Indiana Jones while hiding behind the couch during the scary parts.

The upcoming series titled “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” promises to transport viewers to an unexplored part of the “Star Wars ” galaxy. The story revolves around four young adventurers embarking on a journey following a remarkable discovery on their planet, reminiscent of classic children’s films produced by Amblin Entertainment. Series creators Jon Watts and Christopher Ford have openly discussed their sources of inspiration for the show in various interviews, emphasizing the unique atmosphere they aimed to create. In an interview with ComicBook, Watts and Ford shared their feelings about working on “Star Wars“, their awe at meeting the talented team members, and the impact of “The Goonies ” on the show. They also hinted at the possibility of casting the adult counterparts from “The Goonies” ensemble, an idea that seems fitting for the series.

Watts mentioned when queried about the planned cameos, “We had discussed that conceptually as a possible casting approach, where we might find children from those films and cast them as adult roles. However, it didn’t develop enough to be fully implemented. Yet, there is indeed potential for such an opportunity.

As a gamer, I’m really excited about the fresh take that Skeleton Crew is taking, drawing inspiration from the timeless kids’ films of the 1980s like The Goonies and E.T. This unique twist sets it apart in the vast Star Wars universe. I can’t help but feel that incorporating actors from those classic Amblin movies could have added a special touch to the project, providing a connection to those cherished stories of my childhood. These films transported us kids into uncharted territories, revealing a world far removed from our everyday lives. The actors in these movies hold a special place in the hearts of countless generations, their charm and appeal transcending the passage of time. Although they wouldn’t be reprising their roles in Skeleton Crew, their presence would have created an unbroken link to those timeless tales.

The movie “Skeleton Crew” aspires to resonate with today’s audience like timeless films do. The young cast of “Skeleton Crew”, guided by Watts and Ford, have been inspired by these classic films. It’s clear that “Skeleton Crew” shares many themes with these movies, particularly the journey of children venturing beyond their comfort zones to understand the world around them and their role in the broader reality they uncover. While having actors like Sean Astin, Jeff Cohen, Ke Huy Quan, Martha Plimpton, or others might have made these similarities more apparent, it seems that “Skeleton Crew” is in capable hands in terms of casting.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew premieres December 3rd on Disney+.
