As a dedicated Star Wars fan who’s been following the saga since the original trilogy graced our screens, I must say that the introduction of space pirates in “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” has me thrilled! The return of Vane from “The Mandalorian” Season 3 is a delightful surprise, and I’m intrigued by the mystery surrounding Gorian Shard’s demise.
To start off, the new TV series titled “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” has lent credence to a speculation that’s been circulating for more than a year. The plot seems to revolve around space pirates as the primary adversaries, with some of these characters appearing in previous episodes. Proceed with caution as there are potential spoilers ahead.
In this new adventure titled “Skeleton Crew,” we kick off with a group of pirates seizing control of a colossal spaceship. Among them is Vane, portrayed by Marti Matulis, who hails from the Nikto species and stands out due to his distinctive features – no nostrils and horns adorning his face. You might recognize him from “The Mandalorian” Season 3, Episode 1, titled “The Apostate.” Previously, he was seen leading a band of pirates exploiting Nevarro City, causing conflicts with Greef Karga (Carl Weathers) and Djin Djarin (Pedro Pascal). Eventually, Vane escaped Nevarro, attempting to waylay Djarin in outer space as he departs the planet.
In the thrilling continuation of “The Pirate,” I found myself face-to-face with Vane once more. This time, it was revealed that he takes orders from the formidable Gorian Shard, also known as the Pirate King, portrayed by Nonso Anozie and brought to life by Carey Jones. In the ensuing battle, his ship met a tragic end, leading many to believe that Shard had perished. However, whether Vane now commands his organization or someone else has taken charge remains a mystery. There’s also a chance that the cunning Vane may have somehow survived – only time will tell as I continue my journey in this captivating series.

In March of 2023, it was reported by Bespin Bulletin that the pirate gang led by Shard would serve as the primary adversary in Skeleton Crew, a series being produced at the time. It was suggested by sources connected to the project that these pirates were initially introduced in The Mandalorian for the purpose of being recognizable when they reappeared later. At the time, Jon Favreau, the creator of The Mandalorian, hinted to Entertainment Weekly that Season 3 of The Mandalorian might pave the way for other shows.
He mentioned that there’s plenty of scope for telling tales in the series, as numerous characters are involved due to our understanding of who’s present at that time. In The Mandalorian, we start unveiling those characters, reminding audiences who have prior knowledge about them. For newcomers unfamiliar with other works, these characters are being introduced for the first time here. This allows us to create interconnected stories and carry characters across different narratives, resulting in a dense tapestry that offers a fascinating exploration ground.
The first two episodes of Skeleton Crew were aired on Monday, December 2nd. Starting from next Tuesday, new episodes will be released weekly on Disney+, with the series wrapping up on January 14, 2025. The Mandalorian‘s third season is currently available for streaming on Disney+.
