As a seasoned Star Wars fan who has witnessed the rise and fall of Wookiee family values, I must say, the premiere of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” has reignited my love for this galaxy far, far away. The Easter eggs hidden within its episodes have been nothing short of a treasure hunt for us old-timers, and the reference to the infamous “Star Wars Holiday Special” is no exception.
The debut of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has sparked excitement among Star Wars enthusiasts. The initial two episodes are filled with intrigue, presenting viewers with At Attin, the hometown of the show’s young protagonists, the enigmatic Great Work, and Port Borgo, a notorious pirate hideout. Keen-eyed fans have spotted numerous Easter eggs scattered throughout these episodes, one of which is a nod to the most notorious Star Wars media ever created.
The television special titled “The Star Wars Holiday Special” aired in November 1978 and was met with widespread criticism right from its debut. Emulating the variety show trend of the era, this special was deemed a flop, prompting George Lucas and Lucasfilm to take drastic measures to prevent any future broadcasts. For decades, the only way to view it was by purchasing an unauthorized copy or finding it on YouTube, but not on Disney+. Remarkably, over time, many parts of it have been recognized as part of the official Star Wars universe. The recently released show Star Wars: Skeleton Crew occurs after the timeline of the spinoff (post Battle of Yavin), yet another fragment from this special has been added to the canon.
The Star Wars Holiday Special Introduced Multiple Characters and Concepts Into Canon Over the Years
The Star Wars Holiday Special centered around a fictitious holiday called Life Day, which serves as a substitute for Christmas within the Star Wars universe. This television special primarily unfolds on Kashyyyk, home to the Wookiees, where Chewbacca’s family eagerly awaits the arrival of Chewie, Han, Luke, Leia, C-3PO, and R2-D2 for the celebration. However, unlike other Star Wars media, Wookiees don’t communicate in English but Shryiiwook, a language that viewers cannot understand since there were no translations provided for their growls. The human characters do speak English, yet the show is filled with numerous Wookiee conversations in Shryiiwook, leaving the audience guessing at their meaning.
The show also included appearances from Diahann Carol for a particularly creepy sequence with Itchy and Lumpy watching a circus-like performance (that is referenced in the first episode of Skeleton Crew), a cooking show from a four-armed chef played by Harvey Korman named Chef Gormaanda, Bea Arthur playing a character known as Ackmena who runs the Mos Eisley Cantina in a sequence that ends with a song, a cartoon that contains the first appearance of Boba Fett, a music video from Jefferson Starship, and the culmination of the main plot, when the heroes of the original trilogy arrive to celebrate Life Day.
More of the show than most people realize has been made canon, in both Legends and Disney canon.
life’s most evident occurrence is the celebration known as Life Day; this festivity has been referenced across various Legends and authentic media sources. Interestingly, Chewbacca’s family members were established in Legends, but their names were altered to be more authentically Wookiee: Malla became Mallatobuck, Itchy became Attichitcuk, and Lumpy transformed into Lumpawaroo. These names remain consistent even after the transition to canon.
Gormaanda, from her cookbook titled “Travels with Gormaanda: Cooking in the Core“, was referenced in two Star Wars publications – “Star Wars Galaxy 7”, a magazine for the Star Wars tabletop role-playing game, and “The New Essential Guide to Droids”. This initial mention occurred in a short story called “A Recipe For Death” found within “Tales from a Galaxy Far, Far Away: Aliens: Volume One”. Gormaanda was first visually depicted in the 2022 publication “Star Wars: The Life Day Pop-Up Book and Advent Calendar“, although it was only a simple icon. A more detailed depiction of her can be found on the cover of issue 40 of “Star Wars: Bounty Hunters“. This recent easter egg now officially includes another aspect of the “Holiday Special ” into Star Wars canon.
The Star Wars Holiday Special Has Been Made Almost Entirely Canon
Once upon a time, the “Star Wars Holiday Special” was considered the most criticized work within all Star Wars content. Many wished it never existed, but surprisingly, the creators responsible for different Star Wars media seem to hold a different opinion. In the past, the “Legends” series was known for expanding on minor characters and their histories, and the “Holiday Special” fits this mold. Characters like Ackmena and Gormaanda have been woven into the overall storyline, and Disney’s canon has adopted a similar approach. At present, it’s simpler to recognize elements of it as canon than those that aren’t.
The debate over whether the events depicted in the Holiday Special are considered part of the official Star Wars timeline has often been unclear. Over time, many elements from the special have been acknowledged as canonical, such as the circus scene recently referenced in Skeleton Crew. This suggests that the Star Wars Holiday Special might indeed be entirely canon, even incorporating the original broadcast program. Interestingly, Jefferson Starship’s performance has yet to be officially recognized as a band within the Star Wars universe, despite being one of the last uncanonized aspects from the special. It seems plausible that Disney could eventually release it on Disney+, thereby confirming its placement in the Star Wars timeline, as they have already indirectly established its canonicity in various ways.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew airs every Tuesday on Disney+.
