Warning: Spoilers for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew
Jon Watts and Christopher Ford, creators of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew”, discussed the reasons behind not exploring Jod Na Nawood’s tragic past extensively in the show, as well as hinting at potential plotlines for a second season following the finale’s release. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Watts mentioned that they have concepts for Season 2, but these discussions haven’t been extensive due to the wildfires in Los Angeles affecting many of their colleagues. Watts is looking forward to discussing future plans for “Skeleton Crew” soon.
Ford clarified to us how they decided on their method for portraying Jod’s background. He explained, “The problem was, even though Jod is captivating, we aimed to maintain a child’s viewpoint.” They reasoned that children, having no prior experience with the galaxy or someone as complex as Jod, might find him confusing. Hence, they didn’t think it feasible to include flashbacks in this season. However, Ford and Watts expressed interest in delving deeper into Jod’s troubled past in future installments.
As a loyal follower of “The Real Good Guys,” I can share that it’s been unveiled that Jod, before embarking on his pirate life, was actually a Jedi. During my younger years, I encountered a wise Jedi who saw potential in me and took me under her guidance. Regrettably, our bond was severed prematurely when she fell victim to an attack, which left her lifeless right before my eyes. This traumatic event significantly influenced my cynical view of the galaxy. The show doesn’t disclose details such as the identity of my Jedi mentor or who was responsible for her death.
Watts and Ford have previously contemplated the idea of Season 2 for Skeleton Crew, considering a leap in time to accommodate the growth of the child actors. Although Skeleton Crew received favorable critiques, there’s no confirmation of a second season at this point. However, whispers suggest that characters from Skeleton Crew might appear in Dave Filoni’s forthcoming Star Wars film focusing on the New Republic, which is expected to wrap up storylines initiated in other shows such as The Mandalorian and Ahsoka.
Given the positive response that “Skeleton Crew” received, it’s not hard to imagine Lucasfilm considering a follow-up. With “The Acolyte” getting cancelled after only one season, “Skeleton Crew” provided a welcome victory for the Star Wars franchise. It garnered acclaim for its solid acting and an adventurous feel similar to classic Amblin productions. Characters like Neel and Jod became instant favorites among fans, and there are numerous intriguing plotlines to delve into for a Season 2.
In addition to the main group of kids growing older and facing new personal challenges, it’s also worth noting that At Attin is no longer cut off from the rest of the galaxy. It would be intriguing to witness how the planet has evolved following the events of “The Real Good Guys.”
There’s still much to learn about Jod’s history that deserves further exploration. While it might have been appropriate for Watts and Ford to avoid extensive flashbacks during Season 1 of the series, neglecting to revisit his past could mean missing out on a valuable opportunity. Whether the complete story is eventually told through another medium like a novel or comic book, many fans would be intrigued to discover who initially taught Jod about the Force and who eventually found them. Throughout Skeleton Crew, Jod has proven to be one of the most significant characters in Star Wars lore. Regardless of whether he appears on screen again or is developed further through published materials, his character deserves more depth.
