Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Drops Another Hilarious Phantom Menace Easter Egg

As a film enthusiast with a hearty appreciation for the expansive universe of Star Wars, I must say that the latest episode of “Skeleton Crew” has once again managed to delight fans of the prequel trilogy. The inclusion of a B1 battle droid, a nod to “The Phantom Menace,” is not only a charming Easter egg but also a clever joke that adds depth to the lore of these ineffective droids.

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but notice how Star Wars: Skeleton Crew isn’t holding back its affection for the controversial prequel trilogy. Last week’s premiere on Disney+ had a clear (and chuckle-worthy) tribute to The Phantom Menace with the reintroduction of slang from Tatooine’s younglings. Now, only one week later, another episode of Skeleton Crew has been released on Disney+, and this time, a direct reference to Episode I is hard to miss. This Easter egg is much more overt than the last.

In the latest installment of “Skeleton Crew,” I found myself among a group of adventurous youngsters who had embarked on another thrilling escapade. One of their newest additions was Jod Na Nawood, played by none other than Jude Law. When their trusty droid, SM 33, went missing in the pirate-infested port, it was our new friend who was sent to retrieve him. The first mate droid had become an indispensable and faithful ally since they’d inadvertently taken his ship into space, and these kids made it crystal clear that they wouldn’t set sail without him by their side.

Jod is directed to a modest workshop that appears to serve as a refuge for malfunctioning or seized droids. As he inspects a few units, he’s on the lookout for ones that might belong to his youthful companions, one of which should be easily identifiable to Star Wars enthusiasts.

The third robot Jod tries to communicate with turns out to be a B1 combat droid, which is the same model used by the Trade Federation during their invasion of Naboo, more famously known as the “Roger, Roger” droids.

In addition to serving as a delightful Easter egg for enthusiasts of “The Phantom Menace,” the presence of a B1 droid in “Skeleton Crew” also includes a humorous touch that enhances the history of these largely ineffective droids. Known for their frequent malfunctions and successes only when overwhelming numbers were involved, these B1 models were essentially junk. Consistent with this, they continue to be unreliable in the era of “Skeleton Crew.” When Jod attempts to activate the droid, it manages to utter just one sentence before its head separates from its body and falls to the ground.

As a cinema enthusiast, I must say that the B1 droid’s solitary utterance took the storyline a notch higher, subtly alluding to the era of the Clone Wars. Just before its head met an untimely demise, this droid posed a question, “Did we win?” Now, with hindsight, it’s clear that the droids didn’t triumph over the clones in their struggle – yet, one could debate that there was no true victor, and perhaps, the warring factions themselves weren’t distinct entities. After all, the conflict was orchestrated by a single hand.

Apparently, Skeleton Crew intends to continually include subtle references and hints towards the original Star Wars films within its series, which many devoted fans find quite delightful.
