As a proud supporter of women in filmmaking, particularly those who have made their mark in the galaxy far, far away, I can confidently say that Bryce Dallas Howard has proven herself to be an exceptional director in the Star Wars universe. Her third foray into this iconic franchise with Skeleton Crew episode 6 is a testament to her growth and mastery of storytelling.
Having witnessed the buzz about Skeleton Crew during her work on The Mandalorian, I can attest to the fact that the anticipation was well-placed. Critics have praised the series, with Skeleton Crew scoring an impressive 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the highest-rated Star Wars productions yet.
It’s a delight to see Howard join the ranks of esteemed directors like Jon Watts, David Lowery, the Daniels, Jake Schreier, Lee Isaac Chung, and others who have brought their unique vision to this beloved franchise. I can’t help but wonder if we might see Captain Silvo make an appearance in the MCU’s Thunderbolts someday, given that Jake Schreier is set to direct that film as well!
In closing, may the Force be with Bryce Dallas Howard and all future directors who dare to venture into the Star Wars galaxy. And remember, always trust a Wookiee in a tight spot – they’ll never let you down… unless it involves music!
In the spirit of celebrating the New Year, “Star Wars” is revisiting an old favorite by airing episode 6 of “Skeleton Crew,” directed by Bryce Dallas Howard. Notably, this is her second time directing for “Star Wars” television series, having made her debut in 2019’s “The Mandalorian” (“Chapter 4: Sanctuary”). After that, she helmed the season 2 episode “Chapter 11: The Heiress,” which introduced the live-action version of Katee Sackhoff’s beloved character, Bo-Katan Kryze. Her directorial work continued into season 3 with “Chapter 22: Guns for Hire,” an episode that showcased cameos from popular stars (Jack Black and Lizzo as Captain Bombardier and the Duchess) and ended with Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) handing over the Darksaber to Bo-Katan.
As a movie critic, I can confidently say that the fifth chapter of “The Book of Boba Fett,” directed by Howard, was an undeniable standout in this year’s television lineup. The episode, titled “Chapter 5: Return of the Mandalorian,” managed to secure a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 22 reviews.
This chapter took fans like me on a thrilling journey following the lone bounty hunter after Din departed Grogu with Jedi Luke Skywalker in the season finale of “The Mandalorian.” What made this episode truly remarkable was its portrayal of the Great Purge of Mandalore, a significant event that was depicted in live-action for the very first time. For fans eagerly waiting to witness such an iconic moment, this chapter certainly did not disappoint.
In his third Star Wars series, Howard finds himself as an experienced figure amidst fresh faces in the distant galaxy: The first two episodes of “Skeleton Crew” were helmed by series co-creator Jon Watts, known for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man films. Following Watts, David Lowery, director of The Green Knight and Disney reimaginings like Pete’s Dragon and Peter Pan & Wendy, took charge of consecutive episodes.
In this television series, the Oscar-winning team Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, also known as the Daniels (famous for movies like “Swiss Army Man” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once”), directed an episode titled “Can’t Say I Remember No At Attin”. On Christmas Day, another episode was helmed by Jake Schreier (known for “Beef” and Marvel’s upcoming “Thunderbolts”). In the future, episodes will be directed by Lee Isaac Chung (director of “Twisters” and a season 3 episode of “The Mandalorian”) and the finale by the director named Watts.
During season 3 of The Mandalorian, while I was involved in pre-visualization work, the Third Floor team (responsible for animation and creation) were working on an episode titled Skeleton Crew. Excitedly, I asked them how it was going, and they responded with enthusiasm, “It’s fantastic!” This generated a lot of excitement on set about the upcoming episode.
Many critics have praised the show “Skeleton Crew”: it received an impressive 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, surpassing the scores of most “Star Wars” films and series thus far. The story unfolds in the same timeline as “The Mandalorian,” focusing on four children – Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), KB (Kyriana Kratter), and Neel (Robert Timothy Smith) – who, along with a rogue character named Jod Na Nawood (Jude Law), are on a quest to find their lost home planet, the elusive At Attin.
In the sixth episode of “Skeleton Crew,” airing December 31st on Disney+, we move forward to January 7th for the next installment, which is almost the end. The grand finale will be shown on January 14th.
