Star Wars: Skeleton Crew: Is Jod Really a Jedi? (And Who Is Crimson Jack?)

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew: Is Jod Really a Jedi? (And Who Is Crimson Jack?)

As a seasoned Star Wars gamer who’s navigated through the labyrinth of galaxies and lived to tell the tale, I must say that “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” is shaping up to be quite an intriguing ride. The enigma that is Jod Na Nawood has certainly piqued my interest.

In “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” viewers are embarking on an exciting journey filled with intriguing puzzles. The protagonists, a group of youthful adventurers, hail from the enigmatic world of At Attin, which is believed by all they meet to be a legendary trove of riches. They stumble into a galaxy entirely different from anything they’ve known before, and their only guide is the mysterious figure of Jod Na Nawood, portrayed by Jude Law. When Wim, Neel, KB, and Fern first encounter him in the jail of Port Borgo, he seemingly wields the Force. This makes Wim suspect that he’s a Jedi, leading him to trust him instantly.

As a gamer, I was initially taken aback by Jod in episode three of this series. Back on Borgo, he’s known as Silvo among the pirates, and it turns out he’s the one who snuck away with the children. After we part ways from the Port, he leads us to Kh’ymm, an owl-like alien with galaxy maps. She calls him Crimson Jack, rats him out to the New Republic, and advises me not to trust him. The show has certainly made me question whether Jod is a Jedi or just a cunning pirate, aiming to deceive us kids for personal gain. There are definitely hints scattered throughout the series that suggest his true identity.

Jod Definitely Has Force Powers but That Doesn’t Make Him a Jedi

In episode 2 of “Skeleton Crew”, Jod demonstrates an impressive display of telekinesis by retrieving the keys to their cell. This supernatural ability, known as a ‘Force power’, is not explained through any technological means in the series, and it’s unlikely that Jod or the pirates would have provided him with such means. While there might be ways for him to achieve this using technology, as suggested by Fern in episode 3, there’s no evidence to support this.

Another hint of his Force abilities surfaces in his escape, as he seems to perceive approaching guards even before they arrive. Furthermore, he advises the children about areas with many people versus empty spaces, suggesting that he can sense other beings’ presence. While it could simply be his knowledge of Port Borgo layout and the guards’ routine – given his identity as the pirate captain who led a mutiny at the start of the first episode – this still implies he has mastered using the Force.

In the given episode, it’s plausible that Jod doesn’t identify as a Jedi, considering his age suggests he could have lived during the Republic era before the Empire. It’s possible that he was a Padawan who managed to survive Order 66, similar to Kanaan Jarrus from “Rebels.” However, having two characters with such similar backgrounds might be questionable. A more intriguing approach would be to portray Jod as a Force-sensitive individual, possibly belonging to a non-Jedi sect that uses the Force. This twist could add depth and originality to his character and the storyline.

The Crimson Jack Puzzle

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew: Is Jod Really a Jedi? (And Who Is Crimson Jack?)

Kh’ymm addressing Jod as Crimson Jack raises speculation about who or what this character might be. Originally a character from Marvel’s Star Wars comics, Crimson Jack was portrayed as a pirate. In the series Halcyon Legacy, set within the Disney’s Galactic Starcruiser hotel storyline during the Sequel Era, he reappeared, providing his backstory for the Halcyon vessel from Skeleton Crew. However, since Jod couldn’t be the Crimson Jack of that tale, it doesn’t rule out the possibility that he could still be Crimson Jack in some other context or incarnation.

As a gamer, it feels like I’ve stumbled upon something intriguing: It appears the New Republic is on to Crimson Jack – that’s the moniker Kh’ymm uses when she hails their fighter pilots. Could Crimson Jack be an alias used by our old pirate friend Jod in his past? One that he made notorious enough for a pirate from decades ago to use it to instill fear and awe among his peers. Or, here’s the exciting twist: Crimson Jack could be a title passed down through the pirate community. Maybe Jod is the current Crimson Jack, and years later, the pirate in Halcyon Legacy takes up the mantle. Heck, it could even be that he received the name from Jod himself!

Jod Is a Force Sensitive Pirate but Probably Not a Jedi

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew: Is Jod Really a Jedi? (And Who Is Crimson Jack?)

The series “Skeleton Crew” effectively sparks curiosity among viewers, and one of the most intriguing mysteries revolves around the character played by Jod Na Nawood. From the three episodes aired thus far, it appears that Jod might be a pirate with Force-sensitive abilities, adopting the alias Crimson Jack, and quite possibly the masked pirate captain who led the mutiny against Brutus in the first episode. However, it’s important to note that Jod is not a Jedi. Although Lucasfilm has been known for revisiting character concepts, turning Jod into a new iteration of Kanaan Jarrus, this time with more roguish qualities, seems to be pushing boundaries.

There’s a possibility that he might not be a Jedi, but it would enhance the narrative if that wasn’t the case. In the current canon, there are only a few independent Force users, compared to the abundance in the Legends universe. It would be more intriguing if Jod was from another Force-wielding order or self-taught, having learned a handful of Force abilities to survive. Just like with Skeleton Crew, there seems to be much more to Jod, his powers, and the role of Crimson Jack than initially apparent.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew airs every Tuesday at 9PM EST/6 PM PT.
