As a lifelong Star Wars enthusiast who’s spent countless hours dissecting every tiny detail of the galaxy far, far away, I must say that the first two episodes of Skeleton Crew have left me utterly spellbound! The show’s nostalgic nod to classic kids adventure films is simply delightful, but it’s the intricate layers of mystery that have truly captured my heart.
The initial two episodes of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” have fans buzzing with excitement. This spin-off series revolves around a band of youngsters discovering a spaceship and embarking on an exhilarating journey, reminiscent of classic children’s adventure tales from the past. Similar to those timeless stories and programs, the plot includes some inherent enigmas, and one massive secret unfolds in Episode 2 when the kids reach the pirate fortress of Port Borgo and start questioning how to return to their home – a place known as “At Attin.” Everyone laughs at them, claiming that At Attin is merely a mythical lost planet filled with riches.
In the debut episode, the series titled Skeleton Crew delved deeply into the everyday lives of the children, shedding light on the peculiarities of At Attin. It appeared more grounded in reality than any setting previously depicted in Star Wars. The planet bore a striking resemblance to suburban neighborhoods from classic children’s movies, but it was surprisingly mundane – until we discovered that “the Barrier” concealed At Attin and its inhabitants were dedicated to a duty known as “the Great Work.” This revelation has sparked speculation among fans about the true nature of this enigmatic society. However, there are hints suggesting what At Attin truly is and the purpose of the Great Work – and these indications seem to suggest it belongs not to the New Republic period, but rather the early days of the Republic, prior to the Clone Wars.
At Attin And The Great Work Could Have Been Set Up By The Republic
As a gamer diving into this show, I noticed some subtle hints right off the bat that At Attin is an artifact from before the Imperial Republic. In the very first scene, pirates stumble upon a solitary New Republic credit, and the camera gives it a significant focus. Later on, Wim’s father hands him lunch money, but these credits look nothing like the ones seen earlier. This detail becomes crucial at Port Borgo when Wim tries to pay for transport from their ship to the station, as well as for lunch. Interestingly, Wim refers to his credits as “dataries,” a term that rings a bell for fans of the Prequel Trilogy; in the original storyline, Qui-Gonn Jinn attempted to use Republic dataries to purchase a J-Type Nubian hyperdrive from Watto. The commotion caused by these dataries on the station is quite noticeable, as pirates and criminals alike are eager to lay their hands on them.
On At Attin, possessing Republic credits implies that the planet and its Barrier are neither within the New Republic nor the Empire. There are additional hints about the Republic’s past that viewers might overlook. For instance, Wim’s fascination with the Jedi could appear typical for a child in the New Republic; however, it’s important to note that the Empire has historically portrayed the Jedi as enemies. The public was led to believe that the Jedi betrayed the Republic and were freedom’s adversaries. As such, children’s storybooks about the Jedi would be unheard of, with the Jedi being depicted as monstrous figures instead. While it’s plausible that the New Republic might promote pro-Jedi propaganda, its prevalence is unlikely to be as widespread as observed. Furthermore, no other post-Imperial era Star Wars show has shown anything resembling this.
The technology found on At Attin seems to be reminiscent of the Prequel Era Republic, rather than the advanced tech levels seen in the Core Worlds during either the Empire or New Republic periods. Notably, there’s no indication of the significant historical event known as the war between the Rebels and the Empire, suggesting that At Attin may have had a different history. Additionally, the prevalence of droids on the planet is intriguing, considering their reduced presence post-Clone Wars due to the trauma inflicted upon many systems by widespread use during the conflict. This could imply that At Attin’s culture might not have been affected by this traumatic event in the same way as other worlds.
This strongly suggests that Attin is a venture initiated by the Republic, characterized by secluded and conventional beliefs, which aimed to maintain its cultural autonomy separate from the Clone Wars and the subsequent emergence of the Empire.
Star Wars: What Is The “Great Work?”
This discussion leads us to the significant task at hand – and once more, there are hints in the dialogue of the show that suggest a pattern. One notable feature of the Republic portrayed in the prequels was its extensive bureaucracy. Given its vast size, the Republic required a multitude of administrators to function effectively. It appears that Wim, Neel, Fern, and KB’s education is geared towards preparing them for such administrative roles. When Fern’s mother asks what everyone aspires to become, all students express interest in some form of governmental office job. Wim’s aspiration to help people receives a subtle mockery, which could be expected in a system designed to produce bureaucrats for the Republic; prior to the Clone Wars, the Republic had no standing army for a thousand years, and the Jedi were responsible for matters related to security. Therefore, it seems likely that the Great Work entails maintaining the Republic and its promises of liberty and democracy.
At Attin And The Great Work Are A Throwback To Another Time
The manner in which Skeleton Crew skillfully unfolds the enigma surrounding At Attin and its Great Project is quite impressive. Before departing from At Attin, it might seem that this world belongs to the New Republic, with its inhabitants constructing the administrative system the new administration would require. However, the puzzle of what the Barrier represents could be as straightforward as protective measures implemented by the New Republic for this planet; it doesn’t appear to be affected by the pirate raids depicted in the series.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew airs on Tuesdays at 9pm EST/6pm PT.
