In the Disney+ series “Star Wars: The Acolyte,” there were prophecies of a future that wouldn’t materialize. This eight-episode production introduced twin sisters, Osha and Mae Aniseya (played by Amandla Stenberg), who were born from an extraordinary Force event capable of generating life. One sister was once a Padawan under Jedi Master Sol (Lee Jung-jae), while the other was an apprentice to the masked Sith, the Stranger (Manny Jacinto). Their mother, Mother Aniseya (Jodie Turner-Smith), a Force user who was slain by Sol 16 years ago on Brendok, returned to their home planet in “The Acolyte.” The series finale saw Osha taking up the role as the Stranger’s disciple.
Master Vernestra (Rebecca Henderson) concealed the truth by speaking untruthfully before a Senate tribunal, and later assisted Mae in searching for her former pupil who had embraced darkness. Meanwhile, Osha assumed her sister’s role at the side of the Stranger, implying that their story would continue in another installment of the High Republic era.
In August 2024, a month following the season finale that hinted at more, Disney decided to end The Acolyte after only one season. Despite this cancellation, characters from the show such as beloved Jedi Knight Yord and Padawan learner Jecki have continued their journey in the vast Star Wars universe. Recently, they have been given a leading role in a new young adult prequel novel. Last summer, Kelnacca, a popular Wookiee Jedi, made an appearance in a Marvel Comics one-shot comic book.
In February, you’ll find Osha, Mae, and Mother Aniseya gracing a set of Marvel Black History Month cover designs. These covers, appearing on issues of “Star Wars: The Legacy of Vader” and “Star Wars: The High Republic – Fear of the Jedi”, will also showcase Vail from the “Star Wars: Outlaws” game and Lando Calrissian, a hero from both the original and sequel “Star Wars” trilogies.
Here are the artists named along with their respective comic book characters they portray. Mateus Manhanini illustrates Storm (Marvel’s character), Karen S. Darboe depicts Bloodline: Daughter of Blade, Ernanda Souza works on Black Panther, and Ken Lashley specializes in Venom War: Wolverine.

Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman stated the reason for not renewing The Acolyte was because, while they were satisfied with its performance, it didn’t meet the required level given the cost structure of the title. In simpler terms, the production costs were too high compared to what the show generated, making a second season financially unfeasible.
As a devoted film enthusiast, I’ve got to say that the response to “The Acolyte” has been quite split among us fans. Interestingly enough, while the critic’s consensus on Rotten Tomatoes stands at a solid 72%, the audience rating paints a different picture with only 19%.
Stenberg expressed her sadness over the cancellation of the show and not being able to deliver more to its dedicated audience on social media. However, she also conveyed a sense of lightheartedness and joy about having been part of it, knowing that many people enjoyed it and reacted positively.
