Star Wars: The Acolyte Showrunner Breaks Down That Shocking Sith Cameo

As a long-time Star Wars fan with over two decades of immersion into this galaxy far, far away, I was thrilled to finally see Darth Plagueis step out from the shadows in “Star Wars: The Acolyte.” The intrigue surrounding this enigmatic Sith Lord has been a subject of fascination for many of us since the exchange between Palpatine and Anakin Skywalker in “Revenge of the Sith,” and his appearance in the live-action series was a welcome surprise.

Over the past two decades, fans have been intrigued by the enigma of Darth Plagueis, sparked by a significant conversation between Palpatine and Anakin Skywalker in “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.” Although this character has been delved into in the Star Wars lore known as Legends, it was only with the debut of “Star Wars: The Acolyte” that he emerged into live-action. With a brief appearance on screen, newcomers to Star Wars were left guessing about his true nature. However, showrunner Leslye Headland has since validated popular theories regarding Plagueis’ identity and provided background information on how this manifestation came to pass. It remains undecided if we will encounter more of Plagueis in a potential second season.

WARNING: Spoilers below for Star Wars: The Acolyte

The season finale not only featured an appearance by Plagueis, but also included a surprise appearance by Yoda in the last moment. According to Headland, there had been thoughts about having Plagueis show up in the ending instead.

In every adaptation, Plagueis played a pivotal role in the climax as Headland shared with IndieWire. There was an alternative ending where he took Yoda’s place at the finale’s climax. The intention was to amplify Osha’s victory and her alliance with The Stranger. However, Plagueis intruded on that significant moment.

For devoted Star Wars fans, the situation was thrilling, yet it brought up an intriguing query regarding the Sith’s modus operandi: they follow a rule of two, meaning there is always a master and an apprentice. With Osha being drawn into The Stranger’s orbit, we are left in suspense as to who will ultimately assume the roles of master and apprentice among Plagueis, The Stranger, and Osha.

Despite their determined stance towards the sunset, Osha and The Stranger appear destined for tragedy. Headland acknowledged this sadness, revealing that we are aware of forces beyond their control – Plagueis among them. Fated to perish, their relationship is a bittersweet tragedy for those in the know. However, other audience members may view their union as a marriage.

As a devoted fan, I can only share that intriguing glimpses of the enigmatic character were provided through the illustrations of Plagueis, as depicted in Star Wars Legends. These visuals served as inspiration for Headland when designing his appearance. Moreover, what fascinated me most was how Plagueis presented an opportunity to explore the persistence of a sinister figure beyond just raw physical power, which other Sith characters had often emphasized.

If not based on Star Wars canon, then by Legends or individual fan interpretations, the species has been identified. When creating his look and discussing it, the showrunner explained, we drew a lot of inspiration from “Crimson Peak” by Guillermo del Toro. These beings aren’t in power, they’re not leading the First Order, the Empire, or the Senate. Instead, they’re hiding and during this era, the Sith are struggling to survive.

You can express that idea as follows: Discover the first installment of “Star Wars: The Acolyte” on Disney+, currently available for your viewing pleasure. At this moment, a decision regarding a second season has yet to be made.
