As a long-time Star Wars fan and someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the galaxy far, far away, I can’t help but feel disheartened by the recent developments surrounding the franchise. The cancellation of Star Wars: The Acolyte, despite its hefty budget, is a stark reminder of the fickle nature of public opinion and the power that social media wields over our favorite productions.
Initially this year, the production of Star Wars: The Acolyte turned out to be a pricey misstep for Disney, as they invested an enormous $230 million into the Disney+ series that was later swiftly cancelled due to inadequate viewership. Furthermore, the show sparked disagreement among several fans, which likely contributed to its low audience figures. From its announcement, to its premiere, to its termination, the Star Wars series has been shrouded in controversy, and now those involved are starting to speak out about their experiences.
Jodie Turner-Smith, a British actress playing Mother Aniseya in the series, has spoken up about the backlash the show received. She mentioned instances of racism and unfair treatment, as well as a phenomenon known as “dogpiling,” that some members of the show’s cast and crew experienced following its release. Furthermore, she expressed her disapproval towards Disney for not taking a stronger stance against these issues.
The actress expressed her disapproval regarding the show’s response when individuals are viciously attacked online with racism and nonsense, stating that it is unjust to remain silent in such situations. She emphasized that staying quiet is truly unfair.
The actress went on to say: “It would be wonderful if those with wealth took a stand and spoke out against unacceptable actions. Make a strong statement like, ‘You’re not a true fan if you do this.’ See if any money is withheld in response. I dare say it won’t, because people of color, especially Black individuals, hold a significant portion of the spending power. They might discover that it’s more profitable for them, but many seem to shy away from using ‘woke,’ as if it were considered distasteful.
The actress expressed optimism that things will evolve in the future, using the phrase “opinions shift.” Turner-Smith further added, “We’ll reach that point someday, where people won’t be so reluctant to accept people of color as integral parts of projects originally conceived by white creators.
As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: “Unlike many white men, I don’t get the luxury of ‘failing upwards.’ It seems that some are given room to learn and grow, while others are expected to be flawless from the start. Even when I deliver something amazing, there are those who just can’t wait to tear it apart.
Absolutely, it’s worth noting that “Star Wars: The Acolyte” isn’t the sole recent “Star Wars” offering to fall short of expectations. The latest release of a “Star Wars” video game, titled “Star Wars: Outlaws“, has also failed to live up to commercial hype. Interestingly, both these projects have been swept up in the ongoing cultural debate that currently dominates discussions about entertainment.
