Star Wars: The Acolyte Star Teases More Plagueis Had Series Continued

As a long-time Star Wars enthusiast and someone who has patiently waited through the highs and lows of the franchise’s expansive timeline, I find myself deeply saddened by the untimely demise of “The Acolyte.” The tantalizing prospect of exploring Darth Plagueis in a live-action series had me on the edge of my seat, eagerly awaiting each new episode.

Manny Jacinto, who played a role in the Star Wars series “Star Wars: The Acolyte,” mentioned during a panel at FanExpo San Francisco that if the show had been renewed for another season, it would have delved deeper into the character of Darth Plagueis. When asked about potential developments in the series, Jacinto hinted that Plagueis would have played a significant role.

Jacinto hinted that fans might see more of Plagueis in the upcoming seasons of the show, though he couldn’t confirm which specific season. He cautioned against spoilers and unnecessary expectations, but suggested that there were definitely more stories about Plagueis to be told.

In the final episode of “Acolyte,” Darth Plagueis, who once tutored Emperor Palpatine, makes his screen debut. He’s spotted lurking in a cave, observing the Stranger and Osha. For the show’s creator Leslye Headland, this character was crucial to the finale as he featured in every draft during production. Originally, Plagueis was meant to appear in the final scene, but Yoda ended up taking his place instead. Headland had intentions to delve deeper into Plagueis’ storyline if a second season were to occur.

Indeed, the series titled “The Acolyte” came to an end following its debut season, leaving numerous plotlines unresolved. This Star Wars project stirred considerable controversy as it did; on one hand, it garnered a dedicated fanbase who appreciated its portrayal of the High Republic era. However, the series also sparked criticism from various quarters, ranging from objections to its expansion of Star Wars lore to the brief emergence of Ki-Adi-Mundi from the prequel trilogy. After the cancellation, numerous cast members, including Jacinto, voiced their reactions; Amandla Stenberg, among them, described it as “not a complete surprise” given the intense backlash the creative team experienced.

In the Star Wars universe, many fans are eager to explore more about Plagueis, a character significant to the canon. It’s unfortunate that his planned appearance in a TV show didn’t materialize as intended. The idea of integrating this Sith Lord into the narrative of The Acolyte would have been intriguing, offering insights into how he might fit within the storyline. There seemed to be a link between Plagueis and the Stranger, a connection that could have resulted in an engaging dynamic, especially considering Osha’s descent into the dark side. Moreover, reintroducing Plagueis could have provided Lucasfilm with a chance to connect The Acolyte with the Skywalker Saga, potentially revealing how he acquired the power he later discussed with Palpatine.

There’s a chance we could learn more about Plagueis in other Star Wars materials, even though it seems unlikely that The Acolyte series will return. Instead, Lucasfilm’s publishing division offers an opportunity to delve into the Sith through novels or comic book series. For instance, characters like Yord and Jecki from a canceled series are now part of a young adult novel, while Kelnacca has his own comic. This suggests a pattern for introducing characters previously seen in canceled projects. Although it wouldn’t be the same as resolving The Acolyte’s cliffhangers on-screen, it could provide fans with a continuation of the story. Given that Plagueis was already the focus of an acclaimed Legends novel (covering his time teaching Palpatine), Lucasfilm might consider asking an author to develop Plagueis further within the official Star Wars canon.
