As a seasoned Star Wars gamer with memories of the original trilogy etched deep within my core, I must say that Marvel Comics is doing a commendable job in expanding the universe we all know and love. The Battle of Jaku – Republic Under Siege has certainly piqued my interest, especially the intricate character development of Leia and Adelhard. Their struggles to build new governments, one democratic and the other imperial, are a refreshing change from the usual lightsaber battles.
There’s a vast amount of untouched ground in the Star Wars universe that wasn’t shown in the original trilogy. For years, the Star Wars Expanded Universe, through novels, comics, audiobooks, and more, delved into the lives of characters like Luke, Leia, Han, and others after the events of “Return of The Jedi”. However, that universe is no longer active. Now, Marvel Comics is using this opportunity to expand upon the period after the fall of the Empire and the deaths of Palpatine and Darth Vader. In this new series, “The Battle of Jaku – Republic Under Siege” is being developed.
The narrative kicks off with Luke and Rynn finding themselves on the swamp planet Lehanis, where they encounter a fresh problem – a bothersome group called the Acolytes of The Beyond. Meanwhile, readers witness Princess Leia grapple with a challenging situation, not just against a new adversary Governor Adelhard, but also figuring out how to establish a new Republic. In her story, Leia is weighing various options, none of which seem particularly attractive upon closer examination. Lastly, Star Wars enthusiasts get a glimpse into the inner workings of Adelhard’s reformed Empire, as the antagonist tries to unite the remnants of malevolent forces.
An Empire In Shambles
The Battle of Jaku – Republic Under Siege shines brightest during its more subdued scenes, where characters like Leia and Adlehard grapple with tough decisions requiring diplomacy and political maneuvering to ensure their ideals are realized. In the context of the New Republic, Leia is striving to create a new democratic system for the universe; however, she’s gradually understanding that preserving peace may necessitate getting her hands involved in more complex matters. This portrayal of Leia offers a fresh perspective on her character, as it presents her with choices that aren’t simply about destroying a Death Star.
I too found Adlehard’s story engaging, as he employs a strategy reminiscent of Leia, yet with an unyielding determination to construct his new Empire. The intricate aspects of Palpatine’s rule were skillfully managed not just through Sith powers but also his sharp wit and ruthless ambitions. Oskure, portraying the devil on his shoulder, fits perfectly in this context, providing an interesting contrast to Adlehard. The Governor is a fervent supporter of the Empire, and although crafting a new villain to rival existing ones can be challenging, Adlehard offers a refreshing shift from the norm.
As a diehard Clone Wars enthusiast, I can’t help but sing praises for the Star Wars Unlimited Twilight of the Republic Starter Set. This duo delivers a punch that’s nothing short of stellar for fans like me!
The Republic Has Cracks in The Foundation
One challenge I encountered with this first installment was that it’s situated in the heart of an extensive narrative arc halfway through. Diving straight into issue #1 could leave you quite bewildered about the ongoing events for the characters, as it did for me. Although there’s a brief introduction at the start, I believe a debut issue should always engage newcomers with a compelling reason to follow along.
The narrative of Luke and Rynn seems less compelling than Leia and Adlehard’s struggles, despite introducing popular character Dr. Aphra in the finale. The main battle scene for Skywalker and his partner lacks impact, as it doesn’t stand out against the other captivating elements presented in the opening issue.
