As a lifelong Star Wars enthusiast who’s witnessed the saga unfold through the eyes of countless iconic characters, I must say that Grogu has swiftly and undeniably captured my heart. The adorable little guy, also known as “Baby Yoda,” has become an instant sensation since his debut in The Mandalorian back in 2019.

The news is confirmed: Grogu takes the title of the sweetest extraterrestrial across the cosmos. Since his appearance as the charge of helmeted Mandalorian Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) in the Disney+ series Star Wars: The Mandalorian in 2019, fans have been yearning for more of this endearing alien and his bounty hunter guardian. And now, with the The Mandalorian & Grogu film set to hit cinemas in 2026, Disney and Lucasfilm have commenced a series of anime-style shorts titled Grogu: The Sweetest in the Galaxy.

Through the official Star Wars Japan Instagram account, you can find the shorts showcasing “a cherished character from a distant galaxy sporting a fresh appearance, blending design elements and vibrant hues inspired by Asian pop culture,” according to a recent announcement.

The title “Grogu: Cutest in the Galaxy” represents a collection of fresh, self-generated digital shorts featuring the irresistibly endearing, witty, and lovable character from “The Mandalorian.

In simple terms, the Japanese version of Star Wars will release up to two original Grogu videos each month at 7 PM (Japan Standard Time) on Fridays. You can already find the first two episodes, which also include appearances by the Mandalorian and a Loth-cat, online. Enjoy watching!

At Tokyo Comic Con 2024, Disney unveiled a “Grogu: Sweetest Star in the Cosmos” collection of merchandise. This range includes plush toys, figurines, fashion items, food products, and more. You can find Grogu-themed merchandise, along with other Star Wars goods, on the official Tokyo Comic Con website and Disney Store Japan.

In an upcoming production titled “The Mandalorian & Grogu“, the characters Grogu and the Mandalorian (also known as Din Jarin) will make their next appearance. This film represents the first Star Wars feature film since The Rise of Skywalker, which was released in 2019. Notably, Jon Favreau, the series creator and showrunner, is directing this movie, featuring Pedro Pascal reprising his role, along with Sigourney Weaver (known for her roles in Alien and Avatar) and Jeremy Allen White (from The Bear and The Iron Claw). It’s rumored that White will portray Rotta the Hutt, the son of Jabba the Hutt.

Favreau expressed his delight while making the announcement, stating, ‘I’ve enjoyed spinning tales in George Lucas’ intricate universe.’ It’s truly thrilling for me to imagine the Mandalorian and his young charge Grogu appearing on the big screen.

As a devoted Star Wars fan, I’d rephrase that as: “Together with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have brought two fresh and cherished Star Wars characters to life. This upcoming story is tailored perfectly for the big screen.
