The Star Wars Unlimited’s Jump to Lightspeed collection is available in stores now, and Fantasy Flight Games is swiftly revealing what’s coming up next. In a significant move, Star Wars Unlimited is delving deep into the Force with its upcoming set called Legends of the Force, and we have all the information and a sneak peek at the leaders, the new Force ability, and other exciting additions to the game.
In the new Legends of the Force set, the theme of ‘Force’ is being emphasized more prominently, impacting significant cards and leaders that previously bore the ‘Force’ trait from earlier releases. This time around, characters wielding the Force will take center stage, and a fresh gameplay element called ‘Force tokens’ will be introduced.
Following the Star Wars saga’s “Force” theme, the game Legends of the Force introduces Qui-Gon Jinn and Darth Maul as commanding figures, each equipped with a unique Force token and four special-rarity cards in their play decks. The Force Token is a key element in the game, allowing only one copy to be controlled by each player at any given time. Players can acquire this token through various effects, primarily through base locations.
Bases such as Shadowed Undercity and Jedi Temple, featured in the latest expansion, possess 28 Health Points but grant the ability to generate a Force token whenever one of your Force-attacking units is deployed. Having a Force Token at your disposal empowers you to activate potent abilities on your cards.
As a gamer, I can say that Darth Maul, in his basic form, possesses an incredible ability: he can tap into the Force to inflict 1 point of damage on two separate units using a Force Token. If he’s out on the battlefield, this power transforms from an action to an On Attack trigger, allowing me to deal damage without spending my precious Force Tokens. Pairing him with a base that generates these tokens amplifies his potential significantly, as I can then use one of those tokens to activate another ability while still inflicting damage with Maul himself. It’s a formidable combo!
Maul’s play deck offers various strategies for utilizing the Force Token. For instance, Darth Sidious can be employed to harness the Force and defeat non-Sith units with 3 or fewer health points if the Force Token is used. Additionally, the Drain Essence Event generates a Force Token upon damaging an opponent’s unit. Lastly, Savage Opress presents an option to use the Force, but if you opt not to, you must inflict 9 damage on your base instead. In short, consider employing the Force!
Switching topics to Qui-Gon Jinn, in his Leadership form, provides a chance to utilize a Force Token. This token enables you to put a friendly non-leader figure back into its owner’s hand. Subsequently, you can place a unit (not of the villainy type) from your hand onto the field at no cost, as long as it costs less than the returned unit. When Qui-Gon is active on the battlefield, this ability transforms into an On-Attack skill. If he successfully survives the attack, he can then carry out the remaining effects of that ability, thus preserving your Force Token for future uses.
Qui-Gon Jinn’s deck of cards can assemble quite a formidable team by leveraging the Force ability, with Obi-Wan Kenobi being one such member. When you play a unit with the Force keyword (including Kenobi himself), he gains Sentinel. This allows you to strengthen Kenobi further using Refugee of The Path, which grants a Shield token to any unit that possesses Sentinel. Anakin Skywalker introduces a new Hidden ability, protecting him from attacks during the same phase, thereby giving you at least one turn to make use of his card. Additionally, when you play Anakin, he receives a Shield token, extending his stay on the field for a while longer.
Another card in the deck significantly enhances others, and that’s Qui-Gon Jinn’s Aethersprite. This ship offers an On Attack ability: When you utilize a “When Played” ability during this phase, you have the option to use that ability again immediately. For instance, you could play Refugee of The Path for back-to-back shielding of a Sentinel unit or Stinger Mantis, which lets you inflict 2 damage on an exhausted unit upon being played. With this ability, you can deal an additional 2 points of damage to the same exhausted unit or another one, provided it’s also exhausted.
In a fresh update, Legends of the Force is set to introduce approximately 260 brand new cards, along with the innovative Force Token and Hidden Keyword, enhancing the depth and fun in an already captivating game. Expected to hit shelves in July, this expansion will also coincide with exciting accessory launches from Gamegenic. Although we’re yet to catch a glimpse of the new deck boxes and play mats, we’ve already been treated to 4 stunning Art Sleeve designs, showcasing characters such as Maul, Qui-Gon, and Grogu.
