As Star Wars Celebration 2025 drew to a close (held in Japan), it was revealed that the third installment of the animated anthology series is on its way. Those who crave more of the animated show that presented various perspectives and artistic styles of Star Wars won’t have to wait much longer for new episodes. Among the nine planned, three will serve as sequels to popular shorts, while the other six are original stories developed by different anime studios.
What makes this announcement particularly thrilling is that all nine episodes of Star Wars: Visions Volume 3 are being produced by some of Japan’s premier anime studios, both established giants and up-and-coming talents. Notably, these upcoming episodes will showcase six original stories, each contributing significantly to the broadening horizons of what Star Wars can and should become in the immediate future.
Yuko’s Treasure Will Star an Adventurous Kid & Her Giant Droid Bear
Animated by Kinema Citrus
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t wait for Kinema Citrus to revisit the galaxy far, far away with a sequel and a fresh tale in the form of “Star Wars: Visions” – specifically, the new short titled “Yuko’s Treasure”. In this intriguing storyline, we follow Yuko, a spirited orphan who’s grown up under the care of an extraordinary guardian, Billy. Unlike any other droids in the Star Wars universe, Billy is a colossal, cuddly-looking teddy bear droid that provides both companionship and protection to our young heroine.
In the new, unvoiced animated clip of “Yuko’s Treasure,” we see Yuko colliding with Jawas’ belongings while piloting her speeder. Billy then rushes to help Yuko, freeing her from the debris, just as a group of upset Jawas appear. As for the treasure that the title hints at, it remains a mystery, but it seems likely that “Yuko’s Treasure” will offer an exciting family-oriented adventure featuring a charming child and her large bear companion.
The Smugglers Will Be Set in Star Wars’ Criminal Underworld
Directed by Masahiko Otsuka, animated by Studio Trigger
From its title and character descriptions, it seems clear that “The Smugglers” will be set within Star Wars’ shady criminal realm. Additionally, these characters are reminiscent of roguish anti-heroes akin to Han Solo, as they carry on his legacy. During the panel discussion, it was mentioned that Han Solo is one of the key inspirations behind this series.
Furthermore, it has been announced that Masahiko Otsuka, co-writer of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, will pen the Star Wars short film. It’s tempting to see similarities between this and the upcoming Smugglers series. Yet, given the writer’s previous work, it’s not unlikely that the Star Wars episode may involve a botched heist as well.
The Bounty Hunters Will Follow Star Wars’ Newest Bounty Hunter
Animated by Wit Studio
Title clearly hints at it: “The Bounty Hunters” delves into a grittier side of Star Wars’ criminal network. Here we follow our masked heroine, a bounty hunter, and her droid companion navigating the cosmos. The short film will depict them on their current assignment, but beware, all may not be as it appears, with a hint of deceit from the shady character who employed them.
At present, “The Bounty Hunters” doesn’t have a confirmed director or cast members attached to it. However, renowned animation studio Wit Studio, famous for making “Attack on Titan” a worldwide phenomenon before moving on from “The Final Season” to Mappa, is set to animate the short film. Further details about the short are scarce, but the panel hinted that it would be filled with action and excitement.
The Song of Four Wings Will Feature Star Wars’ First Magical Girl
Animated by Project Studio Q
According to the discussion during the panel and based on the initial trailer of Star Wars: Visions Volume 3, it appears that “The Song of Four Wings” will offer a magical girl-style adventure. The central character is depicted as a princess embarking on an incredible journey. Notably, her power armor bears a striking resemblance to the X-Wing Fighter, which could be why the title refers to “four wings.
Instead of Star Wars: Visions‘ other shorts, which maintain a level of connection with the movies’ reality, The Song of Four Wings delves deeply into the magical girl genre and its tropes. The trailer showcases a vibrant transformation scene, hinting that soon we might witness Star Wars’ debut of a magical girl engaging in combat against colossal AT-ATs.
The Bird of Paradise Will Reinterpret Star Wars’ Hero’s Journey Through Japanese Mythology
Animated by Polygon Pictures
It’s clear that among all entries, “The Bird of Paradise” in Star Wars: Visions Volume 3 promises to be the most uniquely captivating, given its focus on Japanese mythology and culture. This isn’t speculation or exaggeration; the creators have explicitly referenced George Lucas and Joseph Campbell as their points of inspiration.
From the brief glimpses shown in the trailer for Star Wars: Visions Volume 3, it appears that The Bird of Paradise will present a more mystical and naturalistic portrayal of the Force. Imagine the dreamlike, otherworldly Force experiences of Rey from Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi, but reimagined as digital anime and interwoven with elements of ancient mythology. This new take on the Force and its users is expected to offer fans a fresh perspective they’ve yet to encounter.
Black Will Follow a Stormtrooper’s Descent Into Darkness & Madness
Directed by Shinya Ohira, animated by David Production
The initial “Star Wars: Visions” short film presents a Stormtrooper as its main character, making it unique among Empire-focused stories that have long captivated “Star Wars” enthusiasts. Interestingly, this production appears to delve into the grim realities and madness of war, as suggested by the concept art and depicted fight scene.
In this depiction of a Star Wars scene, a Stormtrooper’s damaged helmet exposes his worn features and bloodshot eyes. Simultaneously, a dogfight unfolds between two TIE Fighters, with one pilot mistakenly perceiving the other as an X-Wing. Accompanied by jazz music, the battle escalates, culminating in the pilot’s eerie, mad laughter. This interpretation of combat within Star Wars may prove to be darker and more dreamlike than what fans are accustomed to.
* The first two volumes of Star Wars: Visions are currently streaming only on Disney+. Volume 3 will be available starting October 29, 2025.
