Steven Knight, who once intended to pen the Star Wars film centered around Rey establishing a new Jedi Order, shares insights about his tenure on the project. In a chat with The Telegraph, Knight divulged details about working within a colossal Hollywood franchise and his endeavor to distinguish himself amidst what he termed as “the system.” It’s intriguing to note that although Knight parted ways from the unnamed film several months ago, he believes Lucasfilm may incorporate certain ideas from his script into the ultimate production.
According to Knight, there’s a particular process, and once you participate in it, you understand its nature. You carry out your responsibilities, submit your work as I did, and then the process progresses. I believe a significant part of what I contributed will be featured in the final product – we’ll see! But that’s the general idea.
Despite the announcement of the new Star Wars series, “New Jedi Order,” at Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023, the movie has faced challenges during its production process, with several writers having a go at the script. The latest attempt is by George Nolfi, who penned “The Bourne Ultimatum.” Although specifics about the plot are being kept confidential, it’s rumored that the film will unfold 15 years after “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” with Daisy Ridley set to reprise her role as Rey. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy remains attached as the director for this project.
Recently, Ridley shared with ComicBook her enthusiasm for an upcoming Star Wars film, even though she hasn’t yet read the script. She’s been informed about the story and is eagerly anticipating its quality, as Lucasfilm is dedicating time to make it exceptional. The production timeline for this movie remains uncertain. Following Jon Favreau’s “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” which is set to premiere in May 2026, Shawn Levy’s Star Wars project might be next, aiming to start filming later this year.
When Knight departed from the “New Jedi Order” in October 2024, the reason for his exit remained undisclosed. Given Lucasfilm’s penchant for secrecy, it’s challenging to definitively say whether or not Knight’s ideas will still be incorporated. It’s plausible that creative disagreements arose between Knight and other parties, leading to his departure from this major studio blockbuster. If so, Lucasfilm might have decided they didn’t like the direction Knight was taking the “New Jedi Order” storyline and chose to part ways. However, it’s also possible that some of Knight’s concepts will not be discarded entirely. Star Wars enthusiasts may remember Michael Arndt’s involvement in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” despite leaving the project during its early stages. If the final script for “New Jedi Order” retains a substantial amount of Knight’s ideas, Lucasfilm could potentially credit him for his contribution on the film.
It’s quite possible that similar events will unfold [in the different versions of New Jedi Order]. The specific variations between these versions aren’t clear yet, but they probably share commonalities since they all stem from the same foundation – Rey’s role in starting a new era for the Jedi. Some major themes from Knight’s draft might be preserved in Nolfi’s version, while certain character interactions and plot points could change significantly. When New Jedi Order is eventually released, it would be intriguing to explore more about each version and gain insights into the film’s evolution process.
