Starfield 2 Will be “One Hell of a Game,” Former Bethesda Designer Says

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the anticipation for Starfield 2 among the community is palpable. Having worked at Bethesda Game Studios myself and having been part of the teams that developed Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim, I have a unique perspective on this matter.

Without a doubt, Starfield has its dedicated fanbase (including myself), but it’s clear that the sci-fi RPG didn’t garner the same level of impact and universal praise as we usually expect from Bethesda Game Studios, known for hits like Fallout and Elder Scrolls. Nevertheless, a former designer at Bethesda, Bruce Nesmith, is optimistic that Starfield 2 will be an exceptional game when it eventually releases.

In a conversation with VideoGamer, Nesmith (formerly of Bethesda) discussed how they were able to build upon the legacies of games like Morrowind and Oblivion by creating Skyrim, and he hinted that having the fundamentals for Starfield will enable them to make ongoing enhancements with future releases.

Nesmith stated that when creating Skyrim, they benefited greatly from having Oblivion and Morrowind as previous projects. This means that instead of starting everything anew, they could build upon what was already there, enhancing it and adding new features. If they had to start from scratch, it would have required an additional two or three years of development time.

I’m eagerly anticipating “Starfield 2”. I believe it’s going to be an extraordinary game as it aims to address the concerns that players have been expressing, such as “We’re not quite there yet. We’re still missing something.” It will enhance existing features and rectify many of those issues by introducing a wealth of new content.

Nesmith continued by mentioning other franchises such as Dragon Age and Assassin’s Creed, which he suggested required follow-ups to build upon their strengths following a rocky beginning. Some might contend that Dragon Age: Origins remains the most powerful entry in the series.

He noted that initial versions of many popular IPs, such as the first “Dragon Age” and “Assassin’s Creed,” often display bursts of greatness alongside elements that don’t resonate with everyone. These games aren’t as instantly captivating or widely acclaimed as later ones. However, it’s often in subsequent versions of these games where their true potential is fully realized and appreciated.

Last month, Starfield saw its first post-launch update, known as Shattered Space. Earlier in the year, director Todd Howard hinted at the game getting annual paid expansions. Rumors suggest that the upcoming expansion could be called “Starborn.

Starfield is available on Xbox Series X/S and PC.
