Among the long-lasting and beloved role-playing games ever launched is “The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim,” which came out in 2011. The game’s enduring appeal could be attributed to various factors, such as the strong community support through extensive modding, but it’s also essential to acknowledge the game’s own captivating elements.
As per ex-Bethesda developer Nate Purkeypile, the reason for this was that they had extended timeframes and greater creative leeway to incorporate elements into the game. In an interview with PCGamer at GDC 2025, Purkeypile, who worked on Skyrim as a world artist, disclosed that Bethesda previously didn’t adhere strictly to development deadlines.
He mentioned that in the past, there was a lot of room for creativity when projects were underway at Bethesda. One example he shared was Blackreach, which wasn’t part of the original plan but was worked on independently and later added to the project.
As a gamer, I’ve always found it fascinating to learn about the behind-the-scenes stories of my favorite games. For instance, did you know that in Skyrim, the werewolves we all love weren’t initially part of the main project? According to Purkeypile, they started as simple human-dog hybrid characters, and someone decided to transform them into the epic creatures we now encounter in the game.
Many wonderful aspects found in ‘Skyrim’ are due to its open-ended nature, which allows for self-directed play, rather than games that follow a more structured ‘to-do list’ design or decisions made collectively.
With the expansion of Bethesda’s development teams, the company has become significantly stricter regarding project schedules, particularly for newer titles such as Starfield. As Purkeypile pointed out, the current approach is quite different from the past, and deviations can lead to consequences because everything now carries a cost.
He noted that when over 500 individuals are involved in something, it becomes chaotic, but if it’s around 100 people, it’s easier to handle and where many fascinating aspects often emerge.
In the end, Purkeypile acknowledges that he found his job at the studio much more satisfying when it was focusing on games such as Fallout 3 and Skyrim. However, as Bethesda began to bring in more developers for bigger projects, his enthusiasm for working there gradually decreased.
He mentioned that during the development of Fallout 3 and Skyrim at Bethesda, when the team was around 65 to 110 people, he truly enjoyed his work. However, as the company expanded and grew larger, his enjoyment significantly decreased.
After debuting, Bethesda’s latest role-playing game, Starfield, has garnered a mix of critical opinions. However, this hasn’t stopped the game from being potentially quite successful. Interestingly enough, in November 2024, Bethesda revealed that over 15 million players had already experienced it since its launch.

Recently, Bethesda Game Studios announced on platform X that they have content for the game Starfield scheduled for 2025. Although they didn’t provide specifics, the company mentioned they will share details about their plans for this RPG when the appropriate time arrives.
