Stargate: Every Episode is Now Streaming

Amazon Prime Video recently expanded its collection by adding three more “Stargate” titles, bringing most of this extensive series to a single streaming platform. The titles added are the original movie “Stargate” (1994), “Stargate: Continuum”, and “Stargate: The Ark of Truth”. Amazon Prime Video previously had the main series, Stargate SG-1, but these new additions have significantly increased its offering. This growth in content is likely due to the 2023 merger between Amazon Studios and MGM, which formed Amazo MGM Studios. MGM has held the rights to the “Stargate” TV continuity since its inception, while StudioCanal controls the original movie. Fortunately, this hasn’t prevented the entire franchise from being available on a single streaming service.

1994 marked the debut of Stargate with a film featuring Kurt Russell and James Spader. You can now watch this on Prime Video. Three years later, a TV show started airing on Showtime, following up from where the movie ended. While maintaining the same storyline, it introduced some modifications to the environment and core concept. The main characters were also replaced, with Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks stepping into the roles originally played by Russell and Spader respectively.

After that point, the franchise grew into the extensive library now available on Amazon Prime Video. The original series shifted to SyFy in 2002 and was soon accompanied by a spinoff titled “Stargate Atlantis.” In 2009, another series called “Stargate Universe” made its debut, outliving both its predecessors but not for much longer. All three shows can now be found on Amazon Prime Video, as well as the short-lived reboot series “Stargate Origins,” which first aired online in 2018.

The newly-mentioned films are actually movies, not TV series episodes. The original “Stargate” movie may not align perfectly with the TV show’s timeline, but it’s still an enjoyable watch for fans and a fun addition to a binge-watching session. Following that, both “The Ark of Truth” and “Continuum” are part of the TV shows’ continuity. “The Ark of Truth” is set right after the finale of “SG-1”, concluding its final storyline. It’s best to watch it after Season 10 of “SG-1” and after Season 3 of “Atlantis”. On the other hand, “Continuum” takes place immediately afterwards, so these films should ideally be watched consecutively.

In essence, Stargate could be the final epic science fiction franchise of its kind in Hollywood, given the trend towards abandoning long-running series during the streaming era. The series boasts 364 episodes, 3 movies, and additional tie-in media, making it a vast amount of content to consume. This abundance is reminiscent of Star Trek, yet contemporary franchises like The Expanse continue to honor its legacy. However, it’s challenging to foresee a new intellectual property receiving such extensive screen time in the near future.

The Stargate franchise is streaming now on Prime Video.
