Stars from Sex Ed, HoT, Join BBC’s Powerful Prison Drama

The lineup of actors is set for the upcoming BBC series, a six-part production titled “Waiting for the Out” (working title), which is based on Andy West’s memoir “The Life Inside.

The recently announced television show, penned by Dennis Kelly (of Matilda the Musical fame), is currently under production by SISTER – the creative team responsible for The Split and Black Doves. Filming for this project has commenced within and nearby Liverpool.

As a captivated observer, I’m eagerly anticipating the performances of The Responder and Josh Finan from Black Mirror, who will be taking on the roles of the charismatic educator, The Responder, and Dan – a philosophical instructor within the walls of a correctional facility.

Each episode, Dan facilitates conversations delving into timeless themes such as power, liberty, fate, and others, which have puzzled philosophers for millennia. These concepts take on fresh relevance when examined from the perspective of the imprisoned individuals, sparking emotional debates and fostering dramatic conflicts.

Finan will be joined by Gerard Kearns, known for The Day of the Jackal, who portrays Dan’s abusive father during flashbacks. Stephen Wight, famous from Bergerac, takes on the role of Dan’s brother Lee, while Phil Daniels, recognized in House of the Dragon, plays Dan’s uncle Frank. All these characters share a common history of incarceration.

The narrative proceeds with the following: “Dan chose a unique route distinct from his kin, yet as he delved into his job at the penitentiary, an unsettling fear gnawed at him – a relentless anxiety that he might be destined to follow in his father’s footsteps and end up incarcerated himself.

With each passing day, the intensity of Dan’s personal troubles seems to escalate, putting not only his own destiny at risk, but also that of his beloved family.

Joining Finan, Kearns, Daniels, and Wight in the series are Samantha Spiro (from Sex Education), Ronkẹ Adékoluẹjo (known for Doctor Who), Neal Barry (Rain Dogs), Alex Ferns (Andor), Francis Lovehall (A Thousand Blows), and Steven Meo (Gavin & Stacey).

Kelly stated in her commentary: “It’s quite common for males in Andy West’s lineage to find themselves incarcerated, yet Andy is the exception who voluntarily went to prison.

It’s an incredible journey to witness this captivating tale unfold from the pages of the original novel to the silver screen.
