Since the introduction of the Steam Deck, an active modding community has thrived. However, the Steam Brick may take the cake as the most daring and innovative of them all.
I’m observing a compact gaming device, the Steam Brick, which was ingeniously crafted by the creative mind behind GitHub’s account, crastinator-pro. The intention here was to minimize the already portable console from Valve even further.
As a tech-savvy traveler, I’ve found myself leaving my Steam Deck at home more times than I’d like. It simply doesn’t fit comfortably in my backpack, takes up an excessive amount of carry-on space, and it’s a nuisance to retrieve from the overhead compartment when needed. When I do take it along, it’s either connected to XReal Air 2 Pro AR Glasses or plugged into a TV. This led me to ponder: could it be possible to make this device smaller and lighter by removing the built-in controller and screen? Seems absurd, doesn’t it?
Thus, the venture commenced to dismantle the integrated controllers and screen, with the aim of transforming the Steam Deck into a device that boasts enhanced portability.
The summary is that they took apart the Steam Deck, confirming that the machine could start up and show output just with the motherboard and battery. With this confirmed as working, they adapted the metal frame from inside the Steam Deck to be reused in the Steam Brick, and then printed a custom case for it using 3D technology.
The final product, as depicted in the pictures, is a gadget that is approximately one-third the size of a Steam Deck and about 24% lighter. If Steam Machines were still around, this device would be a perfect match for all of them.
This project is more about the thrill of doing it rather than necessity, yet it’s undeniably impressive. By equipping a pair of smart glasses and a portable controller (often used with the Steam Deck during travel), it has transformed into a game console that can go anywhere. Grades aside, the initiative deserves an ‘A’ for effort, although modifying your own Steam Deck in this way might not be advisable.
