Additionally, it can access Steam libraries directly without relying on specific software support, unlike earlier handhelds such as the PSP and PS Vita that needed dedicated software support.
Despite IDC’s prediction that the total sales of Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, and MSI Claw will only reach about two million units in 2024, it becomes clear just how limited the current market for portable PC gaming actually is.
Nonetheless, the sector anticipates significant expansion in this market, as indicated by Microsoft’s confirmation of its development work on a handheld device, and whispers suggesting that Sony might be planning a comparable project for the PS6.
Approximately 3% of PlayStation 5 (PS5) owners have bought the Remote Play streaming system, known as PS Portal, since its launch at the end of 2023. This percentage, when applied to the 75 million consoles that Sony has shipped worldwide, implies roughly 2 million units of the PS Portal have been sold over the past year and a half.
There could still be opportunities in this emerging market. As hinted earlier, one of the strengths of devices like Steam Deck is their ability to run games without needing special software. If Sony truly plans a new handheld console alongside the PS6, its success will largely depend on how seamlessly it integrates with their current game library.
