Stefan Dennis Calls Neighbours’ 40th Anniversary ‘Meaningless’ After Shocking Cancellation!

Fans of Neighbours are facing a mixed feeling as the soap opera celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, but at the same time, it has been revealed that it will be taken off the air by the end of 2025.

It seems it’s also a strange time for the show’s stars, as Stefan Dennis, who has played Paul Robinson on and off since the very first episode, has given his own thoughts when speaking with TV Tonight.

Dennis expressed disappointment over the cancellation of their event, stating that it had made the 40th anniversary seem less significant. He lamented that it was a pity because an Australian show reaching the milestone of 40 years is a remarkable achievement, particularly when considering that most shows focus on news and current affairs.

“But unfortunately, that’s now being completely and utterly overshadowed by the fact that the show is now on its way out. So the 40th anniversary means nothing now. It’s a bit of a shame.”

Dennis additionally discussed his turbulent journey with the soap from its inception, stating: “To be honest, I’ve quit the series on five different occasions.

I stopped watching the show when it was canceled by Channel Seven in 1985, I chose to leave on my own in 1992 to pursue new adventures and sow my wild oats, I returned in 2004.

He continued: “So this is five times that I’ve actually left the show. But it’s three times that this show has actually been axed which has created yet another piece of history. It’s the only show in the world, as an ongoing serial, that’s been axed three times.”

Jason Herbison, the executive producer, has disclosed the reason behind the show’s termination. He stated that the decision was made due to Amazon Freevee being closed down by Prime Video.

“But there is another side of me thinking we’ll definitely never get picked up again now,” she explained. “Last time, there were whispers going around about the Amazon deal. This time round it feels a little bit more real.”
