Stephen A. Smith isn’t backing down.
Following a wave of criticism triggered by his remarks concerning Serena Williams’ appearance with Kendrick Lamar during the Super Bowl halftime show, the host of First Take decided to clear up his previous statements.
In his response to the critic, Stephen clarified that he was speaking generally from a male perspective, focusing on what many men might think. He assured there was no disrespect intended towards Serena, and he acknowledged that people have valid reasons to be upset about serious matters. However, he emphasized that this situation does not warrant such reactions, so let’s keep things in perspective.
To clarify, since we were just bantering on @FirstTake, let me stress that it wasn’t a big deal. Phew, you guys can relax now.
On February 9th during the Super Bowl, Serena took everyone by surprise as she danced the Crip Walk on stage, accompanying Kendrick while he performed his song “Not Like Us,” which is a diss track aimed at Drake.
After the event, Stephen proposed that Alexis Ohanian, the Grand Slam champion’s husband, consider ending their marriage due to her public criticism of Drake, whom she had a brief relationship with in 2015, on an international platform.
Stephen expressed on the “First Take” podcast during a February 10th episode: “If I’m your husband, I’d be wondering, ‘Why are you up there taunting him – taunting your ex?’ If my spouse is engaging in this behavior towards an ex, it suggests they don’t truly belong with me. It seems that their concerns should lie elsewhere – and not with me.
On February 9th, Alexis, who married Serena in 2017, couldn’t help but express admiration without a hint of concern regarding his wife’s significant event, stating “Quite remarkable half-time show.
And he later highlighted the meaning—beyond her Drake connection—of dancing in the show.
A few people seem unaware of the backlash Serena faced over a similar dance routine at Wimbledon 13 years back, and it’s evident from their responses… This, however, transcends the realm of music.
In her own words, Serena – mother of Alexis Olympia, aged 7, and Adira who is just 16 months old – expressed her excitement about the Super Bowl halftime show by saying, “I felt a bit of myself fade away when I watched it! It was amazing!
