As a seasoned gamer with countless hours logged into various digital worlds, I must say that my anticipation for “Heels” is as high as the ropes in a wrestling ring! Having dabbled in my fair share of small-town dramas (think “Stardew Valley” or “Life is Strange”) and being an ardent fan of Stephen Amell’s work, this series seems tailor-made for me.
The wrestling drama, titled “Heels,” starring Stephen Amell (previously known for his role in Arrow), is set to arrive on Netflix this fall. Showrunner Mike O’Malley is optimistic that the series will create enough excitement on the platform to potentially commission additional episodes, similar to what happened with Suits, a USA Network show that spawned a spinoff featuring Amell. Despite the abundance of streaming platforms currently available, it’s Netflix that boasts an audience large enough to realistically revive canceled shows, and both fans of the defunct Starz series and the creative team behind Heels are hoping for a second chance, as the show taps into a new viewer base.
Sharing a platform with WWE Raw could potentially benefit the series, as there’s a good chance some of their audience might tune in. Arrow and other CW shows have historically performed well on streaming platforms. The show Heels debuts on Netflix on September 15th, while WWE Raw is set to join Netflix starting from January 2025.
As someone who grew up in a small rural town where everyone knew each other and lived and breathed sports, I can say that “Heels” resonates deeply with my personal experiences. The series takes me back to those nostalgic days of Friday night football games and the intense rivalries between teams and individuals. However, what sets “Heels” apart is its unique focus on the wrestling world, a niche sport that was a big part of our small-town culture.
On the show “Heels”, Michael O’Malley, who serves as the showrunner and executive producer (previously known for “Survivor’s Remorse” and “Shameless”), takes on a double role by portraying Charlie Gully in addition to his production duties. The creator of the series is Michael Waldron, renowned for works such as “Loki”, “Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”, and “Rick and Morty”. Other executive producers include Christopher Donnelly, Pete Segal, Patrick Walmsley, and Julie Yorn. Produced through O’Malley Ink and LBI Entertainment in collaboration with Lionsgate Television for STARZ.
