Stephen Graham and Ashley Walters lead ambitious Netflix crime drama Adolescence

As a seasoned movie buff with a deep appreciation for gritty, character-driven dramas, I can’t help but be intrigued by the upcoming Netflix crime series “Adolescence.” The announcement of its star-studded cast and innovative filming style has me eagerly anticipating this intense four-part exploration of a family’s world being turned upside down.

As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the upcoming Netflix crime drama, Adolescence, from the brilliant minds of Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne, has officially announced its star-studded cast. I’ll be right there in the front row, watching as Stephen Graham takes the lead, joined by Top Boy’s Ashley Walters and The Crown’s Erin Doherty. Can’t wait to see what these talented actors bring to life on screen!

In the forthcoming four-part series, Owen Cooper, Faye Marsay from Doctor Who, Christine Tremarco of The Responder, Mark Stanley known for Happy Valley, Jo Hartley in Passenger, and newcomer Amélie Pease will make their appearances.

As I sat down to watch “Adolescence,” I was intrigued by the premise: a family’s life gets flipped on its head when their 13-year-old son, Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper), is accused and charged with the murder of a classmate. The official synopsis confirms it – this series isn’t for the faint-hearted. It delves deep into the complexities of adolescence, where the lines between innocence and maturity blur, and the consequences of actions can be dire. I, for one, am eager to see how this gripping story unfolds.

Stephen Graham takes on the roles of Jamie’s dad and the designated adult, Eddie Miller. Ashley Walters portrays Detective Inspector Luke Bascombe, while Erin Doherty is introduced as Briony Ariston, the clinical psychologist handling Jamie’s situation.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that in this new series, I get to see Graham collaborate once again with the talented Philip Barantini, who directed “Boiling Point.” The show is expected to adopt a format reminiscent of that groundbreaking kitchen drama film.

As a movie buff, I’d describe it this way: In each episode, the camera never breaks its gaze. It stays locked on to every detail unfolding before us in a single, breathtaking take. The focus remains on the main characters and their evolving drama, as if we’re peering into their world in real time.

In addition to overseeing the production of Boiling Point, Baranti was also in charge of directing two episodes for that show’s sequel and every episode of the ITV drama titled Malpractice.

I’m a huge fan of Graham’s acting abilities, and he’s gained widespread recognition for his captivating performances in various films and series like “This is England,” “Peaky Blinders,” “The Walk-In,” and “Time” as well as “The Irishman.”

The writer who collaborates with him on the show Thorne also played a key role in creating “His Dark Materials” and “Best Interests,” while their past partnership extends to productions like “Help” and “The Virtues.”
