Stephen Graham in first look at Peaky Blinders creator’s new drama A Thousand Blows

As a lifelong enthusiast of historical dramas and gritty underworld tales, I am absolutely thrilled to hear about Steven Knight’s new series, A Thousand Blows. The setting in Victorian London’s illegal boxing scene sounds like an irresistible blend of action, drama, and intrigue that is right up my alley.

A sneak peek of Steven Knight’s A Thousand Blows has been revealed, exciting fans with its raw and intense new show.

The drama “A Thousand Blows” unfolds in the dangerous realm of underground boxing during Victorian London, with Malachi Kirby (from Small Axe), Erin Doherty (known for The Crown), and Stephen Graham (recognizable from Boiling Point) taking charge of the show.

In the initial glimpses, Hezekiah Moscow of Kirby, sporting injuries like scratches and bruises, is clearly visible. He’s dressed in attire typical of the 1880s Victorian era.

His personality gets drawn into the lively and turbulent mix of post-Industrial Revolution London’s East End, which he originally hails from Jamaica.

In other locations, Mary Carr, portrayed by Doherty, is often found taking respite near a boxing arena. She’s the head of the Forty Elephants, an infamous all-female gang in London, who are seen fighting for their existence amidst the city streets.

In another look, Graham’s Sugar Goodson can be seen preparing for a match.

Hezekiah comes up against Goodson, “a seasoned and dangerous boxer”, and soon the pair are “locked into an intense rivalry that spills out way beyond the ring”.

In the upcoming year, the first season of our dramatic series is set to premiere on Disney Plus. We’re also planning a second season, but we haven’t disclosed specifics about it just yet.

Among the other characters are Francis Lovehall from Small Axe portraying Hezekiah’s close friend Alec Munroe, Jason Tobin known for Warrior taking on the role of Mr. Lao, and James Nelson-Joyce from Time playing Edward ‘Treacle’ Goodson.

In this production titled “The Forty Elephants,” we have Hannah Walters portraying Eliza Moody, Darci Shaw playing Alice Diamond, Nadia Albina assuming the role of Verity Ross, Morgan Hilaire taking on Esme Long, Jemma Carlton as Belle Downer, and Caoilfhionn Dunne cast as Anne Glover.

Completing the ensemble are Susan Lynch (from Killing Eve), Daniel Mays (The Long Shadow), Adam Nagaitis (Red Rose), Gary Lewis (Outlander), Tom Davis (Murder in Successville), and Robert Glenister (Sherwood). Each brings their unique talents to the roles of Jane Carr, William ‘Punch’ Lewis, the Earl of Lonsdale, Jack Mac, Charlie Mitchell, and Indigo Jeremy respectively.

Born under the guidance of Steven Knight, the brilliant mind behind Peaky Blinders, he expressed: “The affection and dedication put into crafting this exhilarating storytelling is palpable from the very start.”

As a passionate cinephile, I find our narrative captivating because it’s rooted in the authentic experiences of individuals who led exceptional lives amidst extraordinary periods.
