Without a doubt, it’s common knowledge that both Stephen Graham and Malachi Kirby went through intense preparation to convincingly play their roles as Sugar Goodson and Hezekiah Moscow in A Thousand Blows.
However, an interesting twist emerged: prior to their initial on-camera clash, Graham would share training videos with Kirby, which seemed more like a friendly provocation than mere preparation.
During a press kit interview for the series, Kirby was questioned about if he and Graham ever talked about their training prior to their initial on-screen battle.
Stephen used to share video clips of his workouts with me, accompanied by the message “You’d better shape up, I’m hot on your heels!” We exchanged such motivational workout videos to spur each other on.
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but reminisce about the thrilling process behind the fight scenes in our movie. The intricate choreography, meticulous planning, and rigorous training we underwent ensured those action sequences popped on screen. It was an exhilarating journey!

Furthermore, discussing his own preparations prior to the filming, Kirby mentioned: “Approximately four months before we began shooting, I started gearing up physically. The training was truly thrilling. Initially, I was running in the cold weather while dressed in a tracksuit, reminiscent of a Rocky movie scene. Later on, I joined boxing sessions with Jamal.
Initially, our attention was primarily directed towards crafting the initial major fight scene within the series, featuring Stephen Graham as Sugar Goodson.
In much the same way, Graham mentioned: “I spent a considerable amount of time researching and observing boxing matches for my preparation. I had a personal trainer, along with my friend Graham Ridge who has been boxing since his youth, assisting me in developing a unique fighting style. This process not only shaped the physical aspect of my character but also its combative nature.
Experiencing the process of getting into the best physical form I’ve ever known was truly delightful! Additionally, I made an effort to maintain the genuine essence of the character and the era as much as possible. It wasn’t just about achieving a six-pack; rather, it was a quest to portray a fighter, a street brawler accurately.
Instead, I’ll lift some weight, then focus on refining the carving process. It was an incredibly rewarding adventure, crafting the tangible features of this no-holds-barred urban boxer.
In their arrival from Jamaica, Hezekiah and his confidant Alec (Francis Lovehall) find themselves unexpectedly immersed in the shady side of the East End. While Hezekiah initially dreams of a career as a lion tamer, he soon discovers that certain paths are blocked for him. As a result, he gets drawn into the realm of bare-knuckle boxing.
That’s where he encounters Sugar, the proprietor of London’s final boxing pub, known as The Blue Coat Boy.
According to the summary: “Hezekiah gains wealth and recognition in boxing, which catches the notice of the notorious Queen of the Forty Elephants, Mary Carr. She then uses his skills for her illicit purposes, expanding her criminal activities.
In the meantime, Sugar Goodson, who rules over the East End boxing scene and calls himself an emperor, decides to bring down Hezekiah. This is because Hezekiah aspires to compete in the West End, which poses a threat to all that Sugar has established. The result is a clash between the traditional and the modern worlds.
