In a different telling, “A Thousand Blows” delves into the made-up tale of Sugar Goodson, a tough, no-holds-barred boxer who finds himself locked in an intense and relentless rivalry with newcomer Hezekiah Moscow. The animosity between these two men grows to become an all-absorbing obsession.
In the main roles are Stephen Graham, Malachi Kirby, and Erin Doherty. The character portrayed by Erin Doherty is Mary Carr, the monarch of Forty Elephants, who finds herself ensnared with Sugar and Hezekiah during the height of clandestine boxing in Victorian London.
At the reveal of the show’s visuals and trailer, fans were surprised by the remarkable change in appearance of the actor from Merseyside. In response to questions at a recent event, Graham stated that the goal was to give him a resemblance to a bulldog.
In the show now streaming on Disney Plus, Sugar Goodson is portrayed as someone who should neither be trifled with nor challenged. He’s relentless in his pursuit of victory, whether it’s inside or outside the boxing ring.

Mays expressed that he seemed to have joined later, but when Stephen appeared on set for the first time, it was as if he had consumed Tom Hardy.
I was astonished by the incredible level of preparation displayed by each of them. They didn’t just work hard to get in fighting shape, but they also meticulously choreographed their fights.
Mays portrays William ‘Punch’ Lewis, a bartender and organizer of secret boxing bouts, stirring up excitement among spectators for the brutal fighting contests.
He went on saying: “I was clearly leading the charge in announcing them all, but what’s not visible is that they had to do multiple takes day after day. Their endurance was exceptional, and they worked tirelessly.
During an interview with TopMob magazine, Graham shared insights into his transformation into the formidable and brutally violent character, Sugar Goodson, revealing the steps he took in preparing for the role.
To get ready for the part, Graham exercised every weekday intensely, consumed five meals daily, and collaborated with a group of trainers to achieve the tough, muscular build fitting for the boxing character.
According to Graham, the meal usually consists of high protein content such as chicken, rice, and broccoli. However, he is permitted one indulgence every Friday, either Nando’s or a burger without the bun, and also some ice cream.
It wasn’t until later, when Graham watched the footage of his initial scene, that he truly understood the extent of his personal transformation.
As I turned around, I felt a chill run down my spine, for I saw the camera trained on my back. I gasped, “Wow, is that really me?
Apart from physical exercise and diet changes, Graham drew inspiration from specific boxing personalities while portraying Sugar. In an interview, he mentioned his intention to blend the fighting style of Mike Tyson with that of Lenny McLean.
He mentioned that he intended to develop his fighting technique by combining the styles of the two individuals, which is why they approached their engagements in that manner.
