Stephen King’s The Monkey Gets First Teaser

Stephen King's The Monkey Gets First Teaser

As a gamer who’s spent countless hours huddled around my screen, immersed in the dark, twisted worlds of horror games, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming film adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Monkey”. The collaboration between Osgood Perkins, James Wan, and the master storyteller himself, King, is a chilling trifecta that has me on the edge of my seat.

Introducing last month’s “Longlegs” film helped audiences discover the cinematic talents of writer/director Osgood Perkins. For those who crave more of his chilling style, here is our first glimpse at his adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, “The Monkey.” This collaboration between Perkins and King is already an enticing prospect for horror enthusiasts, but it becomes even more tantalizing when you learn that the movie was produced by James Wan, renowned for creating franchises like “Saw,” “The Conjuring,” and “Insidious.” Although this initial teaser doesn’t reveal much about the movie, it promises to satiate the appetite of fans eager for more from Perkins. You can preview the trailer for “The Monkey” below before its release in theaters on February 21, 2025.

In the anthology “Skeleton Crew” by Stephen King, there’s a tale titled something like “The Monkey Toy.” This story goes that twin siblings Hal and Bill stumble upon their father’s forgotten toy monkey in the attic. Soon after, a string of unsettling deaths occurs in their vicinity. Fearing the toy, they decide to dispose of it and go their separate ways over time. However, when the strange deaths resurface, the brothers need to reconnect to find a permanent solution to destroy the monkey before it claims more lives of those dear to them.

Although “Longlegs” is expected to be among the scariest films of the year, “The Monkey,” as confirmed by Perkins earlier, will have a lighter tone and not be as harrowing as his latest production.

The film will have a vibe similar to movies like “Misery”, “Creepshow”, “Gremlins”, or “American Werewolf”. Perkins shared this with The Boo Crew podcast, adding that it couldn’t be further from the feel of “Longlegs”. In his opinion, if you’re making a movie about a toy monkey, it should be taken seriously. However, much of Stephen King’s work has a humorous and nostalgic undertone. So, we aimed to create a film that had a sense of the late ’80s-’90s about it. It’s as if director Robert Zemeckis had a tiny bit of LSD and crafted a Stephen King story centered around a monkey toy.

He went on to say, “In my opinion, the perfect film is one that both children and their parents would enjoy watching together. It has explosive, extreme scenes that are humorously entertaining. There’s a strong theme of father-son reconciliation, which is touching and nostalgic. The film carries the essence of Stephen King, and having his endorsement adds to the excitement. The success we’ve achieved with ‘Longlegs’ has been remarkable, and the unique nature of ‘The Monkey’, being a completely distinct movie in every aspect, is intriguing as I wait to see how it unfolds.”

The Monkey hits theaters on February 21, 2025.
