Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon will team up once more for the fifth installment of their critically acclaimed comedy road trip show, The Trip.
Over the last four seasons, the duo has journeyed to countries such as Spain, Italy, and Greece. In their upcoming six-episode venture, they plan to traverse Scandinavia in pursuit of the breathtaking Northern Lights.
In 2010, Coogan and Brydon initially teamed up for “The Trip” television series that premiered on BBC Two.
Following the acclaimed run of their semi-improvised show, this dynamic duo has directed three films (The Trip to Greece, The Trip to Spain, and The Trip to Italy), and now, they are set to debut a new television series that promises excitement!

Rob, aged 60, and Steve, who is still 59, embark on an adventure through the wildest regions of northern Europe, including Swedish hotels with striking designs and secluded Norwegian fishing cabins. They continue to offer their unique mix of humor, competition, and insightful reflections.
As they journey, they ponder topics like aging, ambition, family, and fame using their unique perspectives – ranging from podcast disputes and BAFTA rivalries to discussions on Bond films, Bergman, and if they’ll ever decide to retire. Essentially, The Trip to the Northern Lights is an entertaining blend of a sitcom, travel journal, and introspective exploration of midlife, showcasing Coogan and Brydon at their witty, squabbling best.
Upon the unveiling of the series, Coogan expressed his joy stating, “I’m thrilled that Michael Winterbottom has convinced me, at the age of 59, to team up with Rob, who is also 60, to extract the remaining humor from a vessel we both believed was nearly dry.
Brydon expressed his delight as well: “It’s great to embark on another journey, this time through captivating Scandinavia. It’s even more enjoyable doing so with Steve Coogan, Michael Winterbottom, and ourselves still having a good deal of mental capacity left.
Indeed, both actors have thrived outside of The Trip series as well. Most recently, Brydon appeared in the Gavin & Stacey Christmas special, while Coogan has been quite busy this year, starring in Joker: Folie à Deux, The Penguin Lessons, and Brian and Maggie.
In my perspective as a movie reviewer, I’m thrilled to announce that the upcoming series, “The Trip to the Northern Lights,” is set to be directed once more by the talented Michael Winterbottom – a director who has steered the ship for all the prior installments of The Trip. This exciting new journey will be brought to life not only by Revolution Films and Baby Cow Productions but also Small Man, in collaboration with Sky Studios. Stay tuned for more updates!
Meghan Lyvers, head of original scripted at Sky UK and Ireland, expressed her enthusiasm about continuing the famous series with Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon, and Michael Fenton Stevens: “Their unique mix of humor, character development, and social commentary remains as timely as ever. The Trip to the Northern Lights will deliver a sharp, unexpected, and hilarious new installment.
We haven’t announced when the series will be released yet, but production will begin on it towards the end of this year.
