Following a musical duet of “Homeward Bound” by Sabrina Carpenter and Paul Simon to initiate SNL 50: An Anniversary Special (a song that Paul previously performed with George Harrison in 1976), the stage was graced by Steve Martin who delivered a memorable monologue for Saturday Night Live. As part of his performance, he shared the spotlight with his dear friends Martin Short and John Mulaney.
In season two, it was Steve who initially hosted the show and made comments about the glamorous audience. He emphasized that the essence of SNL lies within its writing team, after which a scene transitioned to a gathering of previous and current writers huddled outside 30 Rockefeller Center in a downpour. Then, we heard from John, who as a past writer shared his candid thoughts on the myriad celebrities who have graced the stage at the legendary studio 8H during their hosting stints.
He shared with Steve that the tribute was greatly appreciated by us writers, but what truly defines this show is its celebrity hosts, several of whom are here tonight. As I scan the room, I can’t help but notice some of the toughest individuals I’ve ever encountered in my career.
And then, he shared a jaw-dropping stat.
For more than half a century, a total of 894 individuals have taken the helm on Saturday Night Live, an astonishing fact when one considers that just two of these hosts have been linked to murder. This observation was made by the comedian, who couldn’t help but draw attention to the murder trial of O.J. Simpson, a former host in 1978. “Every week brings a fresh celebrity host with their unique flair,” he continued, “but unlike them, Steve, you don’t have any such charisma.
However, following John’s subtle reference to O.J. and main host Alec Baldwin (who had his manslaughter charges dropped this year due to the fatal rust shooting), he quickly exited the stage. Unfortunately, a distressed Martin then stepped up to perform, expressing his belief that he and Steve were supposed to co-host the event together.
After making a light-hearted comment that only a few Canadian stars missed out on the Schitt’s Creek call, Steve swiftly directed ICE members (Mikey Day and Devon Walker) towards Martin, before congratulating himself on a job well done with his monologue. For those who aren’t fans, he suggested they examine themselves in the mirror, question “What have I become? This can’t be Steve’s fault,” and reflect on when they last experienced joy, as well as consider what they could contribute to the monologue as an audience member.
