Steve Zahn Talks Playing a Survivor in Silo and Beyond

As a gamer with a penchant for survival games and a deep appreciation for compelling narratives, I must say that the premiere of Silo Season 2 has truly piqued my interest. The introduction of Steve Zahn‘s character, Solo, offers an intriguing twist to the storyline, especially considering his prolonged isolation in another silo.

In the debut of Season 2 of “Silo”, we were introduced to Steve Zahn’s character, Solo, a lone survivor discovered by Juliette (played by Rebecca Ferguson) in another silo. Prior to this premiere, Zahn shared his thoughts with Chris Killian from Comicbook.com about how he prepared for portraying Solo in such an extraordinary predicament and offered insights on surviving solitude for extended periods. Please be aware that there are potential spoilers ahead!

Zahn is the only new addition the main cast of Silo this season, which makes sense as the show takes place in a confined shelter which no one can leave. When she emerges, she sees the entranes to other silos around her and she goes into the very next one – “silo 17.” According to previews and synopses released by Apple TV+, Zahn’s character Solo is the only survivor of a rebellion that happened in silo 17 some time ago, and he is living in isolation. When asked how he got into the mindset of such a person, Zahn kept it simple.

“I don’t know, it’s just like, you put yourself in that position, in that place, and it’s amazing what comes to your brain,” he said. “I mean, what do we need to live? What are the things that we do that are natural? What are the things we do that are learned? Really start thinking about it on a completely different level – just companionship and what that means, somebody touching you, like what is that like? If you haven’t had that in decades, it’s a really interesting character to think about and develop. It was really fun, I had a ball and all I did was just think, like, ‘How would I be in this situation?’”

How to Stay Sane

Killian inquired from Zahn if there was a specific item he’d want with him during solitude, to help him while away the time and maintain his sanity. After a brief pause, Zahn replied: “A guitar is what I’d pick. I’d need some sort of instrument – I’d need something to produce something, be it paints or perhaps… I believe artistic endeavors would help keep one’s mind sound.

In simpler terms, “Silo” is based on a series of three novels by Hugh Howey, and some viewers might have a better understanding of where the story in “Solo” is headed because they’ve read the books. As Ferguson mentioned, the plan is to tell the entire story over four seasons, with the next two being filmed consecutively. Filming for season 3 started last month, but it remains uncertain if production will carry on till the end of the series.

Currently, you can stream the first season of “Silo” on Apple TV+. The second season made its debut on November 15th and will air a new episode every week until January 17, 2025. If you’re interested in reading the books that inspired this series, they are available now in print, e-book, and audiobook versions.
