According to Steven Spielberg, it took a great deal of effort on his part to stop a follow-up from being made for his timeless 1982 movie, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, from getting approved.
Based on what the renowned filmmaker said, disagreements he had with studio executives regarding a movie about a charming extraterrestrial character led to him gaining greater control in upcoming ventures.
He declared that the win was earned through great effort since he had no advantages or privileges, according to The Hollywood Reporter, at the TCM Classic Film Festival: New York Pop-Up x 92NY event.
Prior to E.T., I had certain rights, but they were quite limited. Specifically, I did not possess what is commonly known as ‘the freeze,’ a power allowing me to halt the production of sequels, remakes or any other derivatives of the intellectual property (IP). After the success of E.T., however, I gained this right.
Initially, Spielberg expressed no desire to create a sequel for the iconic science fiction movie, but momentarily entertained a concept for a potential continuation.
He mentioned that his mind was solely preoccupied with a book titled “The Green Planet,” authored by someone who penned it specifically for this purpose. This intriguing narrative is set in the residence of E.T.
Visiting E.T.’s home to witness his daily life seemed like an exciting prospect for everyone. However, based on my thoughts, I believe it might have been more captivating as a novel rather than a movie.
As a movie enthusiast looking back at my early days, I, Drew Barrymore, reminisce about my debut in films, where I first gained recognition. Interestingly enough, I shared the stage with the legendary Steven Spielberg, and he recollected his decision to pass on a sequel, which left me in awe as a child star.
She recalled, “You mentioned that there wouldn’t be an E.T. sequel. At the age of eight, I responded something like, ‘That’s too bad, but I understand the reasoning.’
“It seemed like a wise decision, and I get why. But now, what’s our next step? Comparing it to the original might expose it to criticism when leaving it perfect as is would be best.”
This version maintains the original’s meaning while using more natural and conversational language.
Indeed, even though no follow-up to E.T. ever materialized, several other films by Steven Spielberg have led to numerous sequels throughout the years. Notably, Jaws, Indiana Jones, and Jurassic Park have all grown into significant franchise series.
In 2023, you can expect the seventh installment of the Jurassic Park series, titled “Jurassic World: Rebirth.” Originally written by David Koepp, who penned the original script, and directed by Gareth Edwards, known for Rogue One and The Creator.
