Independent game publisher Secret Mode, known for hits like Still Wakes the Deep and A Little to the Left, has recently broken free from Sumo Group, a subsidiary owned by Tencent. The current leadership team at Secret Mode, including co-founder James Schall and VP of publishing Ed Blincoe, collaborated with investment firm Emona Capital to finalize this transaction.

Schall and Blincoe will remain at the helm: “As we gain independence, we can now focus entirely on discovering those hidden indie gaming treasures that players didn’t even know they were missing,” said Schall.
In the year 2022, Sumo Group was entirely taken over by Tencent. Similar to numerous other companies, it faced a significant wave of job reductions in the year 2024. The exact amount that Secret Mode paid for their autonomy remained undisclosed.
