"Stop hiring humans": Y-Combinator-backed firm's controversial billboard lobbying its 'Era of AI employees is here' ad campaign enrages Silicon Valley

  • A recent billboard lauds the replacement of humans with AI employees.
  • The ad campaign claims “Artisans won’t complain about work-life balance.”
  • The company’s CEO admits the ad was designed to draw attention.

As a seasoned professional who has navigated the dynamic job market for decades, I can’t help but feel a mix of intrigue and apprehension as I witness the rise of AI in our workplaces. The recent billboard campaign by Artisan, an AI startup, boldly proclaiming “Stop Hiring Humans” is nothing short of audacious.

As an analyst, I find myself in awe of the transformative impact of generative AI on our world, permeating every sector. Particularly striking is its influence on the employment landscape, where it’s reshaping roles and responsibilities. In the year 2022, Microsoft’s Work Trend Index report revealed a troubling trend: many people felt overworked and pressed for time to complete their tasks. Yet, there’s optimism that AI could alleviate some of this burden. However, it’s also important to acknowledge that 49% of those surveyed harbor concerns about how AI might impact their job security.

2021’s report indicates a widespread integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the employment sector. Many corporate leaders are predominantly recruiting individuals proficient in AI, as demonstrated by a staggering 142-fold increase in LinkedIn users enhancing their profiles with skills such as Copilot and ChatGPT. Interestingly, contrary to the common perception that AI integration might cause job reduction, the executives participating in this study voiced apprehension about the scarcity of skilled professionals capable of filling open positions within their organizations.

Based on a recent marketing strategy by Artisan, an innovative AI company, it’s possible that human roles could become obsolete in the workplace. Artisan has caused quite a stir with their thought-provoking slogan displayed across numerous billboards in San Francisco: “Consider Eliminating Human Hiring” (as reported by GIZMODO).

In a nutshell, Artisan is an innovative tech firm focused on creating AI-driven software solutions capable of handling tasks such as customer support and sales. This technology might, in some scenarios, replace human roles in these areas.

During a conversation with SFGate, Artisan CEO Jaspar Carmichael-Jack clarified their straightforward approach to advertising.

Although they have a touch of dystopia, just like AI itself, the evolution of our world requires attention-grabbing content. Traditional, uninteresting messages won’t catch anyone’s eye.

Here are some of the messages featured in the company’s ad campaign:

  • Artisans won’t complain about work-life balance
  • Artisan’s Zoom cameras will never ‘not be working’ today
  • Hire Artisans, not humans
  • The era of AI employees is here

To whom does Artisan primarily cater? Beyond worries about privacy and security, many users are anxious about potential job displacement due to AI advancements, given the fast pace of technological development. Essentially, the purpose of advertising is twofold: to market a product and increase public knowledge about its availability.

In this particular context, I find myself aiming my creations towards human users. Yet, it seems the showcased item might not resonate favorably, as AI is being marketed as a superior choice for workforce members. Nevertheless, the old adage holds true: any form of attention is beneficial publicity.

Is AI claiming jobs from humans?

While discussing the impact of AI in the job market, former OpenAI CRO Mira Murati indicated:

Perhaps some creative roles might become obsolete. However, if the output isn’t particularly exceptional, one could argue that those positions may not have been essential to begin with.

Although it may seem that image generation tools such as Copilot and DALL-E 3 lack complexity, recent findings suggest that AI technology is approaching the point where it could potentially replace interior designers and architects by generating intricate designs in mere seconds. Ironically, these same advanced systems are incapable of creating a simple white image.

Elon Musk, a renowned billionaire, envisions a time when AI assumes all job responsibilities, transforming work into a pastime. Meanwhile, NVIDIA’s CEO, Jensen Huang, suggests we’re on the brink of a new era in AI technology, marked by self-driving cars and humanoid robots. He hints that coding may no longer be a viable career choice for future generations. Instead, he advises exploring alternative career paths such as biology, education, manufacturing, or agriculture.

A different study hints at the possibility that around 54% of banking roles might be taken over by artificial intelligence (AI). Yet, there’s uncertainty about whether these jobs can truly be fully automated using AI, given ongoing discussions on the limitations of advanced AI as it encounters scaling challenges due to a scarcity of premium content for educating AI systems.
